Thrice to Slay the Slain

sawaboof's picture

Beating a dead horse.

Do you know what it means? It is an action with no purpose. Perhaps a more relevant definition would be repeatedly bringing up a topic when you have absolutely no chance of affecting its outcome.

I won’t give out any specific topics, but a quick glance at the Active Threads list will give you a fairly good idea of what topics have been overdone.

I see so many new faces here on Progressive U and with each of those faces comes the potential for a plethora of new ideas and perspectives on a multitude of different topics. Topics, you may have noticed, is plural—meaning more than one.

Pretend you have $100. Pretend you are in a store that sells everything you could possibly want and each item is $1. Are you going to buy 100 of the same item? My guess is no. So why is it I see all these opinions, born of brilliant young minds, squandered on the same, tired issue(s)?

Is it really so hard to be original? To come up with a subject all your own, rather than creating a blog on a topic that you can clearly see has already been blogged about, literally, hundreds of times? You have to have more than one or two issues in this world that matter to you.

Noah Webster’s birthday is approaching—How has the Dictionary affected the world?
A rescued manatee recently died on his way to Sea World—What is the state of our marine wildlife today, and can we improve it?
Pediatricians recommend children get double the amount of Vitamin D--What is the current nutritional status of children today, and how can we fix it?

Do you see where I’m going? These are all simple news stories that can, undoubtedly, be transformed into amazing and progressive blogs with a little effort and creativity. With a little bit of thinking. You are trying to win a scholarship, aren’t you? To further your education? To help you learn? Did you think it would be easy? That you wouldn’t have to use your brain at all? That the same old everyday topics everyone hates hearing about were going to be good enough?

You were wrong.

So, please. Stop beating dead horses and blog! You can do it! I believe in you. If you need ideas for blogs, grab some inspiration from the Topic of the Week section.

You can blog about any thing you want, so long as it is progressive. Don't put limitations on yourself by sticking to the same subject!

I hope people will read this blog of yours. I'm getting tired of reading blogs and realizing halfway through that the last one I read said exactly the same thing.

Also... it's good advice! People are more likely to read a blog entry that is unique!

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

But most of them would melt! And you would be left with puddles of sticky, pink goo that would likely start to smell bad in a short amount of time. ;-)

A VERY interesting way to be Mommy and educate the unknowledgable children!

What I love ESPECIALLY[!] is all of the blogs that have a political bases... Because we all know that there are a million ways to say the same exact thing, whether it be using Joe 6-pack as the example and changing it to Millard wine case or whatnot.

Last contest, but bravo to you for yours being far better. I have been seeing this alot also especially about the election and it is starting to really get on my nerves.

I have been writing different stuff...at least I think so. Thanks for writing this...I hope people actually read it, the problem is it appears as though the people who need to read these type of blogs don't seem to, but they should.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I am voting for Lewis Black.

Your point was well taken. Why? You opened with a question (i.e. beating the dead horse), presented the issue and it's relevance, suggested ideas, commended and praised, and finally encouraged the action.

Bravo! I believe your positive persuasion will produce some interesting blogs.

You provide a lot of good hints on how to make this a successful blog site. I never thought that people wouldn't tire of regular news stories, but I like the uniqueness of an idea about the maker of Webster's Dictionary's, that's not something you commonly hear on an issues site :) Great idea, I think I shall heed your advice, how about if someone takes a new spin on a current topic, like looks at it from an unlooked at direction, do you find that like beating an old horse?

Just curious.

Thanks for the advice :D

I'd say go to the "Search" option at the top of the screen and look for what your thinking about. If it's, let's say, the war or our current state of economics in the world, type "War" "Iraq" "world economics"...something like that. That'll assemble a list of blogs where those words appear and whose topics are similar. Check out the number of types of blogs you find.

All I can say is, definitely steer clear of the abortion topic. It is so overdone that the word is practically stale. In fact, there's a thread in the forums where we make fun of the overuse of the abortion subject in new people's blogs. Just warnin' ya.

Every time someone blogs about abortion, I kill a puppy.

Please. Think of the puppies.

Wow. Most people just kill kittens. That's taking it a step further.

No no... God kills kittens when you masturbate. Puppies and blogs about abortion are a whole new ball game.

If you can find a way to spin something, so that it take son a point of view that hardly anyone has seen before, go for it! I am all for originality. :-)

But, like Bridge said, check out the search engine here and look up topics you're thinking of... just to see what's already been done.

I'm glad to see you taking all this advice to heart! I look forward to more blogs from you. :-)
