Sarah Palin: A GOP Death Sentence
By Ross Kressel
America was astonished when out of the blue came Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin pulled the preverbal Excalibur from the rock that is the GOP. She was chosen over a pool of possible running mates, which included Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, and Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
With such a great list of possibilities, it is unfathomable that McCain would pick such an inexperienced politician who could better serve as a judge of a beauty competition than the Vice President of the United States of America. Before offering Sarah Palin the position as his running mate, John McCain had only met Palin once. How much familiarity could the two have with each other considering the brevity of their relationship in politics together? The strong bond help by Obama and Biden should be a concern to GOP members as well as moderate voters who haven’t decided who to vote for.
Palin has served as the Alaskan Governor for just 16 months, before which, Palin was a city council member and later mayor Wasilia, Alaska. In 2002, Palin failed when running for Lieutenant Governor, which should make Americans wonder how she could possibly be polished enough to be heartbeats away from the most important position in the nation. It is hard to believe she will be successful in a run as Vice President especially because of her lack of experience in the political arena, especially front and center in D.C.
Beyond her lack of experience, Palin until recently was virtually unknown in the political realm other than in her home state, Alaska, a state that Republicans would have won anyway as they have consistently in the past. One of her main claims to fame is her astoundingly high approval rating among Alaskans. Who wouldn’t be when nearly all Alaskan citizens are given $3,000 per year for the minor inconvenience of allowing for the drilling of raw petroleum in their own backyard? She takes pride in her ability to balance the Alaskan budget, but with the natural resource wealth of the state, a monkey with a calculator could probably do the same.
John McCain at 72 could be come the oldest president in U.S. History, which bring little comfort when standing on the sidelines is a backup quarterback who would be an embarrassment to any nation. Moderates are concerned with McCain leaving the hands of our nation in the hands of Palin who lacks any real amount of experience outside of Alaska. Moderates are even more concerned by Palin’s stance on teaching Creationism in the classroom and staunch pro-life stance.
The 2008 Presidential Election has one strategy not so secret to anyone, the candidate who can pick up the most moderates wins, something that Palin has done the opposite of. A McCain-Palin ticket appears to be a white flag from the GOP, an early surrender in an election that looked very winnable until the party’s fatal error.
