Hey everyone at Progressive U:
I've recently been getting involved with an environmental group in Ontario, Canada, called PERL, or Protecting Escarpment Rural Land. They stand for protecting the marshes and wetlands of the Niagra Escarpment by raising money and advocating better legislation against mining the escarpment for gravel. By mining less along the escarpment, PERL will be saving precious ecosystems and wildlife indigenous to Ontario. They also have a great deal of musician supporters, such as Sarah Harmer, Feist and Bruce Cockburn, who perform at various charity concerts for PERL.
PERL's main campaign is to prevent the creation of an open gravel mine on Ontario's Mt. Nemo. Here, a mining company has proposed a 600-acre gravel pit, which will leave a scar on the mountain, as well as destroy significant wetlands. Also, the residents of the plateau will suffer noise, constant dust and hundreds of trucks in their once quiet home. Currently, PERL has a petition which will go straight to the House of Commons wishes to draw attention to this environmental issue.
