I've always hated the word "tolerance." Yes, tolerance can be used at times but I much prefer people who would accept others more than tolerate others. In tolerating something, you don't like it but you let it pass by you. In acceptance, you can accept a situation for what it is.
As some of you may know, there have been many propositions going around in California for different state matters. One of the hugest propositions that has come up is Proposition 8-whether we should allow gay marriage (support for 8 is no gay marriage, no against 8 is for gay marriage). What's getting to me the most right now is that Utah members are getting involved now.
I understand there being many Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints churches here. Many of the members in Utah now are calling those in California to support Proposition 8 because they believe that they are doing what the Lord wants. They've resorted to calling for support, financial donations, using the internet to write blogs, and texting about the proposition (http://mormonsfor8.com/, http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=e419fb40e21cef00VgnVCM10...).
Now, don't get me wrong. The rest of my family is very religious but fairly liberal starting with my generation. I really have to question though, does one really think that the Lord asks them to take away a right from a fellow human being, a fellow brother? We once thought that Black people did not deserve the same rights that a White person did. Now, we look back in shame for thinking that diversity should be punished and have rights taken away. They were hosed down with water in painful ways for standing up for themselves. Think back to the Stonewall Riots- the same thing had happened. How much longer do we have to make this mistake before we learn?
Love is what it is- love. It comes in many different forms with many different types of people.
