There is a Youth Leadership Summit today in Detroit, MI, that has been taking place since October 12th, discussing ways to improve race relations in the Metro Detroit area. High school students in the Metro area of Detroit are heading to this summit in the hundreds, to discuss these needed improvements and ways towards progress.
This is an important event to allow students to express their concerns, experiences and ideas of improving racial equity.
It is a reality that racism is open and subtle in the US. It is vital for students to hear leaders and be acquainted with organizations that can assist in creating ways of racial equity in the Metro Detroit area for the students and residents.
We have made progress in this country, but racism is very real. People are not taught that everything is racism but they must be aware of what racism is and how to detect it. You must know what racism is to ensure that you are not walking into an unsafe situation or lured into a dangerous and deadly scenario.
For those who never faced racial discrimination, it is difficult to say that people who have faced open racism are playing the race card. People are open with their racism and some do it ways that can be labeled as "tolerant", "politically correct", and "discreet". Racism is hidden and open. Those who face racism need to know how to identify it, how to work towards racial equity, when to fight against it and report it, and what organizations can foster an atmosphere of changing mindsets, hearts, and actions.
I hope that summits such as these occurred in metro areas in every state. Education, discussion and awareness will continue to make racism a topic of importance.
