The American Dream

I just recently finished reading the novel The Great Gastby by Scott Fitzgerald. Though the book took place in the 1920's, it can easily be compared to the present. America is still seperated by those with money and those without it, especially in this time of financial crisis. The characters in the book, the upper class like Gatsby, Daisy and Tom, the middle class like Nick, nor the lower class like Myrtle and George Wilson, ever acheived their dreams. In America today, immigrants come here looking for a better life, and to the dismay of many, never truely have reach their dreams. Is it that America bars those who are born without money the chance to ever reach that high status or does it have to do with the immigrants themselves? Are we a society with an underlying caste system? What truely is the American Dream? Is it really possible to achieve the American Dream?

The Great Gatsby was one of the few books that I have ever been assigned to read that has made me think this much. It is thought provoking, insightful, as well as entertaining. I'd definately recommend it!
