Passionate about my major.

Ok. I plan on going to a four-year college. I want to major in creative writing, and journalism. However not many schools offer creative writing as a major or a minor. I have searched and searched, but only one school in my area has a creative writing class. That is insane. Creative writing is one of the most popular forms of writing in my school. Even schools in California that I searched rarely offer creative writing as a major. What I specifically want to have as a career is writing books. I want to be an author. I have plans for the books I'm going to write. I want to major in creative writing in a school of my choice. Not a school I have to choose. I know it sounds like I'm griping, but do I not have a right to? Yes,there is always journalism, and then I just take a creative writing class, but I want my degree to say creative writing etc. I want my passion to be my major. If any of you out there have any information for me, any suggestions, please do not hesitate to let me know what you know!!! I would greatly appreciate it!!! I have disscussed this with my English Literature teacher, and she was the one who informed me of the school in colorado that offers creative writing as a major. Just a few specifics, I want to go to a school in Colorado, California, Arkansas, or somewhere close to those areas. I want to go to a four-year college on the smaller side, offering creative writing as a major. I need fairly low tuition, offers financial aid, or schlorships, co-ed, non religious, and offers dorms or apartments!!! Thanks a bunch!!!

I too want to write. I'm planning on being a novelist, and can only hope my writing sells. And I actually gave up on a creative writing degree. Yes, creative writing classes help a ton, but there's so much more out there to learn that can help in writing. So I'm attending a Liberal Arts school. I'm going to learn what I can about anything I can, because I can then put my knowledge to use in my writing.

So I suggest you not focus specifically on getting a Creative Writing degree. Not only can, say, a choice of an education in liberal arts give you more opportunities, I firmly believe it can help one to become a better writer. So look at other options. There may be a school where you can have a liberal arts major with, say, a concentration in humanities, and either a double major or a minor in creative writing. There are lots of possibilities that could work out just as well, so try to keep your mind open!

And, as a fellow writer, I highly suggest you look into National Novel Writing Month. Nothing can teach you more about writing than churning out a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. You'll learn the stuff they can't teach you in school. And it's fun. A ton of fun.

I wish you the best of luck in your college searchings! Maybe you'll have the luck I did and stumble upon the perfect school for you completely by accident. ^-^

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
