A lot of groups out there deal with politics in terms of deciding who is "good" and who is "bad", who gets the perks, and who gets cast to the side. We see it all the time at horse shows, fire houses, school cliques, school clubs, and a myriad of other group-oriented organizations, both formal and informal. It seems I have a run-in with this kind of policy at least once a month, and I guess today was that day. Call-backs were posted for this year's spring production (1984). Traditionally, Senior officers are given priority, followed by the rest of the seniors, then the juniors, and the sophomores last. Logically, I should have gotten one of my top 3 choices for call backs, since I am both a senior and an officer. I guess my logic is flawed. I was called back for the part I explicitly said I would put up with if there was no alternative. Now, I realize I'm not that great, but I'm also not half bad, not nearly as bad as some of the kids I've seen in the past with lead roles. Those kids were in my same position, senior drama officers, just like me. The only difference I can see is that they were popular. I guess even my ancient drama teacher is not immune to petty clique ideology.
