Video games inspire violence....really?

I’m what most people would call a “gamer” but I always pondered the question “Do violent video game cause violent behavior?” In my opinion, no it does not. Most people today try to find an excuse to cover up the real issues that causes this behavior. Video games is the chosen topic for causing violent behavior in people because it is such a popular hobby on the market today, so people automatically assume that one must cause the other. Now here is where it gets tricky, a specialist in neuron patterns started to study the effects of violent video games on the brains neuron patterns. What he saw was increased activity in the subjects (50 total ranging 13-21) aggressive areas of the mind. This shows that Yes, violent games increase aggressiveness but to a competitive level, not enough to cause a person to cause extreme violence (stab, shoot, bite, etc.). Yet as soon as the subject was pulled out of the neuron interface, the subject was acting normally with no behavior changes. A half hour later they wanted to see if those aggressive patterns were still present. They were not. Now being a gamer myself I can say that these results may among people, but I have a large group of gaming friend’s newbie’s and pros alike. The increase of competitiveness is without a doubt true. We may be friends out of game but when we are “In the Zone” the only friends you have are those on your team. We will swear, throw controllers, and argue with each other, but with all the gamin parties I’ve been too, not one person has ever got into a fist fight, or really threaten anyone’s real life.
Now, many people will refer to the columbine school shooting as proof that violence and video games exist. I find this opinion fictional for 3 reasons in my opinion. Number one: How did these students be able to get assault rifles for this crime? Yes I will agree that maybe video games gave them the IDEA of what weapons to use but that doesn’t explain the fact that these people were able to purchase weapons that they shouldn’t even had been able to get access too. Reason number two: Many video games don’t have realistic events in them to spark violence. Now many of you are now thinking “What about Grand Theft Auto?” Let me be the first to say, grand theft auto is an unrealistic game. You can’t honestly expect people to believe that they can walk around in a city, with a weapon in their hands, out in the open, and no one says or does anything. The fact that these kids were able to walk into a school, carrying guns was just poor security at that school. My third reason that this is not a case of violent video games is this: This was preplanned by the kids at both of the kid’s houses. Now wouldn’t the kids parents have seen the guns or heard of a hint of the kids plans to shoot kids at their school. Poor parenting is another major reason for this and not video games. Now at this point you people are probably thinking “This guy is completely wrong” or “He is a complete idiot for saying this.”, but I ask you to please continue reading this….cause I am nowhere near done yet.
Now many of you will start googling, or whatever you do to see if my information is right or to disprove it. I encourage you too, but some of you will find an anti-gaming spokesman by the name of Jack Thompson. Jack Thompson was a Florida lawyer who wants to basically ban all video games violent or not. He believes (again my opinion from both facts and stories that I have heard) that all games showing sexual or violent content banned. Many people share this view with him because they have suffered a loss of a family member or friend from violence and needed a reason to believe that it was the cause without proof. Now, the people who share this view have created a website to show off the things Jack Thompson has done and also to add their own feelings towards the issue.
I am one of those people that applaud people for speaking their mind since we all have the right and entitlement to our own opinions, but I feel no one can just say “ This is wrong.” or “ The real reason is…” without any hard evidence to back up at least half of what they say. And hey, I could be wrong, maybe violence is a product of violent games, and who is an 18 year old high school gamer to say. Please leave your opinions good and bad, I really want to hear from the readers.

I am a female and I love video games and the violent ones and movies as well. Some other females don't like these kind of things because I guess that it bothers them i don't know but back to your blog.

Great blog by the way and I have always agreed that video games don't cause violence. I have based my ideas off of the fact I believe a person's personality is key. People want to blame drugs and video games and many other things on why a person murdered someone (or violence). I think the underlying reason is the fact that if the person is already predisposed to be violent they will be violent regardless.

My boyfriend plays video games alot more than I have time to and enjoys Call of Duty 4. When he plays games it relieves his stress and actually lowers his anger (he is not violent his family is just messed up). I honestly believe it sometimes is a problem when people can't relieve stress.

I don't think video games bring on violence, but I do believe if an already violent type person plays video games than yeah. So to sum it up I believe violence depends on someone's personality rather than outside sources.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I am voting for Lewis Black.
