Philosophical Musings in a Political Time From My Mind

What if all we were told was a lie? Scientifically, religiously, anything like that. What if we woke up and realized that all that was a lie? It's weighty stuff, I know, but you know me...well if you knew me before college than you'd know me. Actually, this is me, the me before college, the me that I missed and what wrote the kinda things ive been writing.

Yes, I picked out science and religion, not as a means of picking on them but because they both are probably the two major influences throughout history. Both fighting with each other trying to prove the other right. Science of course is far easier to prove because it deals in the natural. While religion usually deals with the supernatural. However, you can look at the history of certain aspects of religion to prove parts are right, namely places. Both say that they are the truth in this world that we are a part of. Question is, what if they aren't? What if the reality that we believe in, isn't as real as we think.

Do you ever look into the stars and feel so much closer to home than here on earth? When I'm having a shitty, horrible day, I lay down or just look at the stars and I feel so much better. A friend and I bounce around the idea of maybe we're not from this planet. Science and religion have been unable to prove or disprove the existence of extraterrestrials. In a issue of Science Today or something like that, the question was asked of a philosophical physicists if there is a possiblility of extraterrestrials like from Transformers. His response was that there is a 50/50 chance, if I remember correctly, that they exist. Yet that they'd be far more advanced than us to probably even care about us. That leaves a lot open for non-robotic extraterrestrials.

So what is real? We claim that this is reality, but do we know if what we see, experience and feel, is actually real? It could be a clever ploy by a higher being as a science project, or maybe it's a computer program that we're living in. This is what happens when I'm up late surfing Wikipedia and listening to music that makes me think. There could be so many different meanings behind life, so many different beliefs that are unfound. How do we know any of this is right? Because someone tells us? Thats's a horrible excuse but we've got no other way to prove their wrong, especially on a religious and philosophical level. What if everything is a lie...what if what we think is real isn't? I have no idea what the answer is, I wish, but that's what I do...think...too much and not enough.

You said "they'd be far more advanced than us to probably even care about us" I have seen many people say things like this, mostly about God, but I was wondering why that even makes sense. I am far more advanced then my son (I think he is smart but 5) and I care very much for him and have to fight laughter and anger and everything everytime he does a random five year old crazy. So I was just wondering how advance-ness equals disregard for Humans?

Love is like a box of chocolates; if you chose wisely you won’t be disappointed and have to spit it out. ~T

First, I believe in a deistic view of God. Just throwing that out there as a point of reference to remember with me, lol.

I honestly don't know. That was out of a magazine that I wish I had here at college so I could just post the whole thing. Depends on your beliefs and ideas I assume.

I understand your dilemma. I used to keep myself awake for hours thinking about things like that.
The truth is is that nothing you have been told about religion or science is true or false, until you decide it is so.
Science is limited by the five senses with which humans have to observe things. We know that one human cannot possibly understand the universe, because our five senses don't reach that far. If someone presents something as scientifically true, the only thing they can say is true is that they have observed a consistent quality that can also be sensed by someone else with the ability to use the same sense with which they discovered this truth. I love science, but science is limited.
I think it is funny when people insist that nothing should be taken into consideration unless it is scientifically proven. Science is only an objective observation about a quality of something.
The human mind is a perfect example. We can measure electrical activity in the brain, we have assigned different functions to different parts of the brain. We can observe differences in people's brains after they die. We understand that the brain communicates with the rest of our body. But no one can scientifically explain why every human with comparable brain structures thinks differently. Try to explain the physiology of your own internal dialogue that you describe above. It is intangible.
Science is great, but it only tells us part of the story. We can understand the scientific process of reproduction, but we cannot say what am embryo or a fetus is feeling or thinking.
Religion on the other hand, is simply a collective interpretation of human events that people assert are a direct result from our relationship with God. Looking to religion for truth is like asking a monkey about early humans. Religion has evolved along with people, it cannot represent Truth.
Don't get me wrong, I have some respect for religion, but I don't think religion says very much about God, rather it says a lot about how people have experienced or perceived God for themselves. I for one believe that the only way for one to find God is through faith, and faith is an individual process. It isn't found in a book or a church, it is something that actually occurs on an internal level, therefore I dont think it can be reproduced, i also dont think it is entirely a choice.
A person seeking truth need not look to religion or science, except for inspiration.
Everyone's life validates a different truth, we all have to write our own story. It is fun to try to solve all the mysteries of the universe in our own tiny brain, but probably not possible. All we can do is try to answer the questions that mean the most to us, and if we are so inclined we can attempt to share that process with others. That is the greatest validation we can hope for, finding others on a common path, with a common purpose, asking the same questions.
