Why do so many people hate cross country runners? I am an avid cross country runner and work extremely hard everyday and yet people have the gall to make fun of me and other runners. I have been given the finger while running. I've been called almost every name in the book. I've had stuff thrown at me and the list goes on. Why is this? Why do people try to destroy and put down people who work hard? The worst part is that nobody stands up to me and says it to my face. They always do it while driving by in a car or muttering under their breath. If you have something to say about me and my sport, say it to my face. Quit being a pansy and trying to hide in your vehicle. It grinds on me that so many people have no respect for the sport I love and that I work hard to succeed at, but don't have the guts to make fun of me to my face. It’s a shame that America is so overweight as a whole, but then makes fun of those who work hard and run, which is one of many ways to help lose weight and stay in shape. Hopefully one day America will learn.
The Hatred of Cross Country Runners

When I was a kid, people used to cheer for us when we were out running. They'd hoot and holler and honk and give a thumbs up as they drove by.
Just know you are doing a good thing.

Wow--I've never seen this much ridicule happen. It is probably if they believe you are running too much in the road/in their way. I agree that there is no reason for such conduct, ever. I admire cross country runners.. I did track a few years back and love to run I just never can bolster the will needed to run for so long, so often....so it seems odd to me that most people would not. Cross country runners do things that most people can't (or at least think they can't). I hope things go better for you in the future.
Dude--cross-country is the BEST, most hardCORE sport in the world! Nothing compares, not football, not basketball, NOTHING. i did it for six years and i'm super slow but i kept doing it cause it is so awesome!!
it's the only sport i know that makes me feel really connected with my environment. it's different from track in that respect. And you also get to find out exactly what your body can do. It's a like a connection to the days when you had to run for survival and there weren't any cities or civilization just--man and his feet and the earth.
I dunno. I'm not a huge sport person but cross-country really did it for me.
If people are giving you crap about it I don't understand that at all.
