Kids are Cute

(The scene is a small suburban neighborhood, which Spiffy is cheerfully canvassing, knocking on doors with her clipboard and pile of Obama/Warner lit. A man and his family are standing in the doorway of their house, enjoying the lovely fall afternoon.)

Spiffy: Hi! Are you registered to vote?
Man: Absolutely!
Spiffy: Great! Voting Obama, I hope?
Man: No way! We're McCain people. You know he's a trained killer? Don't you want a trained killer for president?
Spiffy: Ah, I prefer a diplomat...
Man: Obama's going to increase spending, raise taxes.
Spiffy: Well, if McCain keeps spending billions of dollars in Iraq...
Man: (interrupting, incredulous) McCain's not spending anything!
Spiffy: ...Alright then. Have a nice day, sir!

(Spiffy moves on. Shortly, she is joined by the man's cute 9-year-old daughter, riding around on her scooter.)

Daughter: Whatcha' doin'?
Spiffy: Registering people to vote!
Daughter: (automatically + enthusiastically) Vote McCain!
Spiffy: Naw, I like Obama.
Daughter: McCain!
Spiffy: But Obama's cooler!
(Daughter glares at her, little eyes narrowed behind her glasses.)
Daughter: I'm watching you.
(She pokes Spiffy, then follows her for the rest of the cul de sac, chatting about her hobbies, which include chasing squirrels.)

Gotta say, I hope this girl grows up to have a mind of her own. Little kids will parrot the views of their parents; this is just fact. But some people actually grow up to vote on whatever party lines they were taught, even if they don't know anything about the candidate, and that's just ridiculous. In this age of information, we have no excuse for not learning all we can about the candidates and basing our votes on facts instead of on sound bites and finger-pointing!

Regardless of parents teaching kids the right way to vote (at least in this case!), the story is very funny! I hate it that only Obama-people are out getting people registered to vote - I always wanna say, "Yep, I'm registered to vote. But I vote brass-collared Republican!"

Why don't you get out there and volunteer for a get out the vote campaign? It's fine to complain, but unless you do something about your beef, it's not going to change.

Obama's ideas and ideals motivate people to make a difference.

True - I should volunteer and not complain. I'll get back to you on that......

I've actually registered Republicans to vote when I'm out canvassing - we want everyone to vote! And if they vote for Obama, so much the better, haha.

Yeah, it's amazing to me how many people aren't registered. When we go out, we get democrats and republicans. Hopefully, 10% of them will actually go to the polls.
