I keep seeing a lot of blogs lately about the national language being English; I'm all for it. It's not excluding anybody, it's saying, "Hey, you want to live here? Since this country was founded on principles of personal responsibility, get some, and learn English! It's America's present to you!" I was trying to explain to a friend of mine tonight how annoying it is to call customer service and get someone whose first language is not English, and then have them try to help you solve a problem that they don't understand in the first place. She laughed at me and said something about being another ignorant American. I resent that! It's not ignorant to want to be able to get a problem solved without have to try and pole vault over a language barrier. I started to defend my position when I realized that, I don't have to! It's annoying and I'm allowed to be annoyed by it! Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn what you think. I know people who have lived in America for decades and still can't put a sentence together. Why? Because they don't have to in order to live here.
People will say, "AMERICA IS A MELTING POT!! You can't discriminate like that!!! AAHH!!!! What ever will we do?!" To that, I respond, "Good job, Sherlock! You've figured out America is made up of lots of different people! Would you like to try the alphabet tomorrow??" Yes, America is a melting pot..blah blah blah...founded by English speaking people...blah blah blah...moreover, our ancestors came here not speaking a word of English, and look how fluent we mutts are now! I'm all European and I'm not having any trouble speaking English! A majority of people who immigrated to America didn't speak a lick of English. So, how'd they learn it?! It wasn't done by government sponsored programs, or ballots in every language under the sun...it was done by assimilation. Forcing people not to rely on that crutch of people they know from their homeland and with whom they can speak their native tongue and hide from learning English. It must be very hard to assimilate in a country that caters to their every need based on the fact that the government thinks of them as poor minority who can't do anything on their own.
It's only natural to find other people in a foreign country who speak your language. I live in Korea and I hang out with foreigners from Canada, America, South Africa, Australia, etc. If I speak Korean, the Korean person usually just answers me back in English; they want to practice and it's easier for me to speak English, so I don't converse in Korean with people unless they don't speak English. Almost everyone speaks English here, or just enough English to get by. The natural mindset is, I don't need to learn the language of this new place to survive here; it's easy, they already cater to language deficiency. I'm not like that by any means, but if I weren't around English speaking people all the time, I'd probably be a lot better at Korean.
My brother lived in Honduras while he was in the Peace Corps for two and a half years. He spoke OK Spanish when he left, but when he returned, he was fluent. He lived in a tiny village with two other foreigners, and no English speaking Hondurans. When the other two foreigners left, he had no choice but to ONLY speak Spanish. My sister-in-law is Honduran. When she came back to the States with my brother, she hardly spoke any English, and my Spanish was only good enough to have a five sentence conversation with her. That two and a half hour Spanish final didn't really pay off in the long run. Three years later, her English is great. Why? Because my brother refused to interpret everything for her and forced her to interact with English speaking people. He wouldn't let her just hang out with other Hispanics because he's seen what kind of damage that does to one's ability to adapt to a new environment.
Since this great nation is a place for lots of people to gather and share their cultures, it's only right that we give them something back: the ability to speak English. Tough love, America...make 'em learn English. They'll thank you later.

I actually wrote a blog with the same title and concept, but I deleted and yours has a better point. I called a company and had to hang up on the people 3 of them and I was going crazy. They were trying to tell me to do this and I was asking them a different question.
Although I agree that people should learn English I think it is fine for others to keep their native language as long as they can actually get their point across. I used to work at a country store and I had to talk to a spanish speaking guy and he wanted to learn english. I was speaking to him in spanish and understood him. I read spanish better than I can speak it though.
I do agree with you though, and the reason most calls places aren't english is because they are outsourced overseas.
How do you like Korea? Are you living there for good? I was just curious. I remember reading one of your comments stating that you were a teacher I believe. Forgive me I have not slept today at all.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I am voting for Lewis Black.

Great minds think alike! ^^
As for Korea...it's alright...it's not awful...it's not the best place I've ever been...but I, for the most part, enjoy it. I'm going home in about five months..I'm pretty stoked! I'll be writing many more entries about Korea because it's by far the most interesting place I've ever been.

Deleted"Press 2 for immediate deportation!"
English is rapidly becoming the default lingua franca of the world. Everybody across the world with a decent education speaks English. If immigrants don't already speak it when they arrive in America then it means we are getting the bottom of the barrel from the perspective of education.
I think we should make English ability a prerequisite to obtaining a green card. Then when we ran across an immigrant that did not speak English we would know that we were encountering an illegal immigrant. It would be a prima facie cause for deportation.
That is a very good idea actually. I have actually heard more people in China speak english than in America...I am not sure if that is true but it might be.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I am voting for Lewis Black.

China has one billion people, and america only has 300 million. It could be possible.
Interestingly enough, immigrants who want their green cards must pass oral, written, and reading English exams. It would be pretty awesome if we could weed the illegals out because of their inability to speak English.
You know what really irks me though? Sanctuary cities! How is it possible for illegal immigrants to "illegal" when they can live under sanctuary laws in places such as NYC and San Fran? http://sanctuarycities.info/ Those cities undermine everything America.

I think you are talking about the citizenship exam which comes, at the earliest, a couple of years after the immigrant obtains a green card. Because a green card gives an immigrant the right of permanent residency, a lot of immigrants never bother to take the final step of becoming citizens. They therefore avoid the English language tests.
I agree about the sanctuary cities. They are clearly violating Federal Law by harboring illegal aliens. I think we should cut-off all Federal Funding to them until they get right with the law. These sanctuary cities are run by elected officials so the people who are to blame are the ones who elected these scumbags. Inevitably it turns out that they are liberals.
Ah, you are correct..mea culpa...where is my brain? My question now is, why doesn't the Federal Government cut off funding to the sanctuary cities until they choose to cooperate? It seems like a great idea...no money for people breaking Federal law. They did something like that in the 60s after Johnson's administration chose to enforce the Civil Rights Act of 1964; integrate or no money for you!
I totally agree that these cities are run by liberals...I've really come to hate San Francisco. Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever hated a city so much in my life.

Which is sad. It is a beautiful city that I used to love to visit. The last time I was there I was constantly pestered by the most aggressive panhandlers that I have ever seen. I will probably never go back. I refuse to drop my tourist dollars in a place which stands for so much that I disagree with.
