Sexual Double Standard

I am sick of it. I'm sick that my brother who, no offense, has worse grades than myself gets cut so much slack when it comes to doing household chores. I may sound like a complaining kid who doesn't like to do her chores - but it isn't fair how men get things off so much easier. I may be generalizing but its been true in my life. I am expected to do so much more than my brother. I am not allowed to go out without asking for permission two weeks in advance. Moreover, when it comes to relationships my parents don't complain that my brother has had multiple girlfriends but they hate the fact that I have one that is actually extremely sweet and responsible.

I hate how in America there exists this double standard that permeates the cornerstone of American ideology. Why is it that the equal rights amendment has not been passed by Congress? Isn't it already far enough into the future that we acknowledge the fact that women and men are equal? If we are a modern nation we should eliminate this double standard.

Many women are overcoming inequality. Hillary Clinton is an excellent example and even Sarah Palin [although I do not like her as the vice presidential candidate for the Republicans]. Women have made great strides in society, but why is it that we are still oppressed? Why does society pay less to working women that supposedly have an equal standing position at work? Why does society have these expectations that women are weak?

I'm complaining because in the future I don't want to be bogged down by the double standard that limits my goals. We've already broken the glass ceiling.

So why can't society accept equality for all?

I’ve definitely been where you’ve been, but I don’t think society oppresses women as much as it used too. Yes, women are still discriminated against in certain areas of life but not as badly as before.

The ERA has been passed by congress, but it hasn’t been ratified by the required number of states yet. These states are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. You can find all the information you need to know here: www.equalrightsamendment.org.

No problem. Yeah, but sometimes it's hard not to feel that way. If you really are interesting in a grassroots womens rights effort you should check out www.now.org They mention a lot of good points.
