Why We Should Lower the Voting Age

"Youth suffer under a double standard of having adult responsibilities but not rights
Youth pay taxes, live under our laws, they should have the vote
Politicians will represent their interests if youth can vote
Youth have a unique perspective, they'll never have those experiences again
16 is a better age to introduce voting than 18; 16 year olds are stationary
Lowering the Voting Age will increase voter turnout
If we let stupid adults vote, why not let smart youth vote?
Youth will vote well
There are no wrong votes
Lowering the voting age will provide an intrinsic benefit to the lives of youth"

These are the reasons why younger people should vote taken from the National Youth Rights Association.

This year's presidential election is going to be a momentous event in American history. Fixed in between crisises, its interesting to see what the presidential candidates stand on a myriad of topics - the economy, foreign policy, domestic issues, healthcare, etc. But I just wish that I could vote.

People may argue that the youth in society are incapable of understanding the candidates, that they can be easily swayed and focus on the unimportant issues. But youth are not stupid and we will make the right choice. I know that politicians avoid having the youth vote because they can not represent their interests to the young people clearly. That is not necessarily the case.

There are so many benefits to having a younger voting age. It will increase voter turnout because people who are around that 18 year old age don't even vote sometimes - youth younger than that are much more excited to vote for presidential candidates. I just find it unfair that people do not even consider that young people are an integral part of society.

If we were to lower the voting age, wouldn't it increase youth awareness on national and global topics?
I know it would.

I don't think that "voter turnout" would really improve that much. Many sixteen year olds are very apathetic, and have no motivation to vote. It does sound like you are taking the election seriously, and good for you, but many teens aren't taking it seriously. As you pointed out we already have a hard time getting adults to vote, why lower the voting age and then struggle getting teens to vote?

Thats true. I guess when I wrote this I was thinking on behalf of myself. I am really interested but I guess alot of teens aren't. I wish I were older.

I have seen a lot of post like this recently. It seems like a lot of younger people on this site are more informed than you average teenager. But as a whole, it would be a challenge to get teens to vote. As someone who is eighteen, I will definitely be voting, and believe that all that aer able to should do the same.

people weren't so oblivious, or ignorant

if only

There are intelligent teens and stupid teens, just as there are intelligent adults and stupid adults. It's killing my this election that I don't turn eighteen until a few months afterward! But I agree, we pay taxes, so shouldn't we have a say in how those taxes are used?
