Behind Closed Doors...

What goes on when no one is paying attention?

Hurricanes, hunger, poverty--these are all things that affect Americans each and every day. However, these problems go unsolved and hidden. Children grow up in poverty to grow up IN poverty. The American Dream is only a dream to those who can afford it. Oppurtunity is given only to those who can find it. What is America if we are not what we say we are?

If you look beyond your own backyard and find the backyards of others, you will see the truth and it is not what we think it is.

The United States of America has the most poverty among affluent nations across the world.

I am thankful for living in America and being able to have a better life than most, but that does not make America perfect. We have many problems hiding under the surface and image that we withold. Organizations to raise money, food, and clothing for the less fortunate in our own country would not have to exist if the government was doing their job. Today's poor children will most likely be tomorrow's poor parents and it is a cycle that never ends. I just hope that one day perhaps a president will come along and make a change. Is it Obama? Clinton? McCain? My fingers are crossed.

I think one way to stop this is gentrification. we need to spread the ghettos out.

I totally agree. City housing policies, city expansion and transportation policies, etc., have a huge impact on the concentration of poverty. If people living in poverty had more choices in housing, they wouldn't have to live in concentrated ghettos, could live closer to work and pay less in transportation, spend less time commuting and therefore have more time with their kids, and their kids could go to schools with less intense special needs.
