How fantastic would it be to not have to pay income tax? The average American pays approximately $1,500-$3,000 annually to their state. Imagine having that extra money for food, a new car, college expenses, or even that new awesome HD television that is on sale at Sears.
On November 4th not only will the United States be voting for a new leader, but Massachusetts will also be voting to get rid of their income tax. Seriously? Absolutely.
The sad part is that the state does have that power. It is a reserved power to the state to require income tax in the first place, so therefore it can technically be taken away if the people want it. But do they honestly realize the consequences?
Income tax helps run the state. Everything from public recreation projects to public safety, even the school systems, are funded by the income tax. Police officers and fire fighters would have no source of income. Public works would go down the drain (such as improving neighborhoods). Parents would have to pay for their children to go to school, which is supposed to be free. They wouldn't have that option. What if there were three kids in the family, at $3,000 per child. That's more than I can afford. I know in certain states public services, such as sewer and garbage, is performed by private industries, but in the state I live in the state pays. What would happen if those simple everyday actions became supported by private industry? Bye-bye money.
I may only be seventeen, with no work experience, but to me, that seems more than what its worth. To me, the people of Massachusetts would be giving up their freedom from paying taxes, and then they would have the freedom to chose where their money goes at the expense of losing everyday procedures that are, sometimes, taken for granted. They would be putting more money out than if they would just pay their income taxes.
As of right now, the poll stands as 40% in favor of the demolition of the income tax, 40% against, and 20% undecided.
*I just want it to be known that I am not from Massachusetts and that everything I know about this particular subject is thanks to my Government teacher.*

So many countries have taken away income tax and only made the people pay sales tax. I don't know about property tax, but it only puts more money in peoples' pockets, which helps to grow the economy. And we all know we culd use that right now!

Yeah, and I haven't heard of any major depressions or recessions from them.

The income tax also helps people like Walter Fender, Diane Wilkerson, and John Rogers. I really don't want to be paying for their salaries. And yet, that's what 40% of the MA government's income goes to. Wasteful projects like this.
The thing with taxes is that the government doesn't care what happens to that money. All those billions of dollars, or perhaps more, is at least partially squandered away. And if you're worried that removing it will increase other taxes, have no fear. In MA, there is a state law that any tax increase more than 2.5% must be voted on directly by the people. That's all you have to do, vote no on the increase. Services will still be payed for by the remaining billions of dollars we give the government in the first place.
