Atheists and Agnostics don’t believe in sin, Hell or divine retribution. For these facts, it is deduced by many-a-Christian that it is not possible for them to be morally sound. In fact, quite a few Christians have asserted, across a host of media, that without the Bible, fear of Hell and the gift of a belief in sin, it is impossible for anybody to be moral; without these prerequisites, it is believed, that we would all be void of any moral common-sense what-so-ever, and without that, we would all surely descend into a frenzied state of moral depravity quicker than a drunk Teddy Haggard in an all-gay meth lab.
Let’s take a peep into the murky, sinister depths of every Theist’s chasm of doom; the realm of facts and stats. Atheists and Agnostics make up an estimated 12% of the American population; Christians make up an estimated 76.5%. With these percentages in mind, and of course the self-declared moral superiority of the average Christian, it may come as a bit of a shock when we juxtapose those general population stats with those of prison population stats.
According to stats issued in 1997 by Denise Golumbaski, Research Analyst with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, 83.761% of the prison population in America is comprised of none other than the morally elite Christian massive, while the Godless, morally impaired Atheist and Agnostic contingent were dragging their heels making a paltry 0.209% contribution to the coffers of America’s thriving prison industry.
How can this be? How can a group of conscienceless, morally bereft heathens manage to behave so, um, morally? I mean, it’s not like they believe that the Bible is the word of God. They don’t believe in sin or even Hell. They haven’t even accepted Jesus as their personal savior and moral compass for Christ’s sake; how the Hell are they keeping themselves from spilling across the map, robbing, raping and murdering their merry way to every Christian door in the land?
Surely it would take more than a few daubs of lamb’s blood to ward off such imminent and conscienceless slaughter, especially if any significant number of the 76.5% of the population demonstrated the courage of their convictions, and were simply turning their collective other cheek in moral indignation; I mean, surely 26 million marauding Atheists and Agnostics would not go unnoticed by the authorities; surely their crimes would make Christian criminals’ best efforts look like making stuff up about their neighbor. This multi-million strong rampage of moral perversion, and the shallow disregard for our fellow man which presumably would accompany it, might surely manifest itself in the religious demographics of the convicted criminals who populate America’s swollen prison system?
Well, the answer to that last question is ‘no’. Actually, if these stats are anything to go by, the whole Christian theory of an inevitable crime-wave of Atheist origins would appear to be a big steaming pile of wrongness.
In a survey of American prisons which covered 29 states, it was found that there was only 15 unbelievers, Spirtualists, Theosophists, Deists, Pantheists and 1 Agnostic in a prison population which comprised of nearly 83,000 inmates.
But surely the murder wing of the average prison manor is populated by a disproportionate number of murderous un-believers? I mean how could they possibly restrain themselves from murdering seven shades out of a bunch of people, without the moral compass that Christianity offers a helpless and base human being? Let’s see the big one, let’s see death row.
Over a 10 year period in Sing-Sing, those executed for murder were represented thus: 65% Catholics,
26% Protestants, 6% Hebrew, 2% Pagan and less than 0.3% non-religious.
Maybe the evil unbelievers are too busy tempting and tricking Christians into running around raping and murdering people to actually get in any raping and murdering action for themselves? It would explain a lot of other mysterious goings-on in the ranks of the God Squad too; Atheists, sending forth their demon offspring, to masquerade as sexy children, luring innocent priests into molesting the bejesus out of them? Atheists, you just can’t trust ‘em.
What other explanation could there be? Morals without the Bible?!

Where are you getting your facts from. You say that 85% of Americans are Christian, and 12% Atheist/Agnostic. That makes 97%, leaving only 3% for Muslims, Jews, Buddhist, and so many other religions. And you "survey" on the number of nonbelievers in prison. I can assure you that out of 83,000 people more than 16 were not religious.
I said estimated. Estimates varied from place to place. The Atheist and Agnostic estimates ranged from 4% to between 10-20%, so I went with an estimated 12%.
The 85% was actually for Theists I think. It's 80% Christian. I'll edit that now.

so can you post links to your sources? I don't doubt your claims, but posting the sources would put doubts of others to rest.

This compiles most of the source material into one place. There are various sites touting similar stats, with some variation here and there; but in most cases the figures are identical.
The questionable 80% Christian figure came from:

A more reliable Christian percentage 78.6% would be here:

The CIA also have stats which allocate 3.2% of the population to Muslims, Buddhists and Jews.

Fortunately, it is really quite easy to reasonably demonstrate that this accusation (when it is leveled) is false. As my pal Thomas Jefferson once said...

Yes, I've changed my username from "percivale" to "Blackout." Go here if you want to know why.
I've made the point several times. I never thought about taking using prison stats to make the it.

At least look a little closer.
I am sure the apparent 'fact' that being an atheist makes one 60 times less likely to end up in prison is pleasing to an Atheist. So pleasing in fact that you may be tempted to accept it on faith. I, having been an atheist during most of my law breaking days, found it a bit harder to swallow.
The source of your figures is a 1997 letter Fully quoted here. Another email from the same source using the same data is:

The pertinent number is 13,878 'no preference' Which is 14.3% of the total.
While the whole truth does not indicate that non-believers are vastly more likely to be caught violating laws than believers, It does refute any claim to any moral superiority among the godless. Since the number of convicted is very close to the distribution in society as a whole perhaps we could speculate that the vastly intellectually superior godless are in fact less moral, but also better able to elude apprehension. ;-)

Someone who has "no preference" in a religious sect is NOT the same thing as an atheist. More likely, these people are either agnostic or simply a non-denominational theist. Or, they may fall into the category of people who just don't give religion much thought, one way or the other. I do not think that it is reasonable or accurate to assign the people in the "no preference" category to EITHER side of this question, since they have not chosen to assert their identity in any of the more specific categories.

Cling to what ever beliefs are helpful to maintain your happiness.
Am I mistaken in assuming that you still feel that Atheism is a lack of religion and non-belief in God rather than a specific set of beliefs? Would that not place it in the same 'No known religion' (18537)category as 'no preference' and perhaps even 'unknown' in this study? Or, are you now claiming that Atheism IS a SPECIFIC religious belief?

My opinion on what constitutes an atheist is pretty straight-forward. Atheism is, by defintion...
A person who expresses "no preference" in a poll denoting membership or adherence to the practices of a religious sect does not meet the prima facie conditions that would permit them to be lumped (as you attempt) into the category of "atheists." It is disingenous to take an uncategorized population and attempt include them in a different specific category that wish to villify.
