Oh Christmas tree...
Ever wonder why many Americans put up Christmas trees every year? Well if you answered yes then you sort of came to the right place. The answer seems somewhat unclear. Some sources say the tradition started in Germany and slowly made its way throughout Europe and eventually made its way to the United States. Since it a total Christian thing to do, Canada and the United States began using the term “holiday tree” in 1990 instead to keep it a little more politically correct. Read More »
Role Models
Todays society needs more positive role models. There are some great role models in todays society but there are also bad ones. Many kids look up to musicians, actors and actresses, athletes and others. There are many people in these catagories that take time out of their busy scheduleto help out those in needs and to help clean up the community. There are also a lot of people in these catagories that do not help out the community. Read More »
Myspace at College of San Mateo
The ban on myspace.com has been lifted at CSM, but some computer labs and the library have allowed it. The ban was origainally place on the basis that it is distracting to the students. CSM did not allow myspace, because it does not allow students to completey focus on their work, and it reduces the bonding between students. Others, some teachers and students, think myspace is ok, because it allows them to talk to friends, and my be useful in research. I do not see how it is helpful in research, but I think it should be allowed. First of all it doesn't even matter if myspace is blocked, because there are many proxies that allow students to get around the security. Students are not distracted by myspace alone, there are many other websites that students can get distracted by. I think the whole ban is a stupid idea, because we are not in jr. high or high school, we are adults, and we should be treated as adults. We are responsible for how we use our time, CSM is not our baby sitter, and they are not their to make sure we doing things right. CSM is there to teach us, not regulate us. Read More »
Police Power and Violence in UCLA
A UCLA student didn't have his I.D. when entering the library's computer lab. As he turned to leave a police officer stopped him. After the students told the police not to touch him and that he was leaving, the student was tasered mutiple times. Other students saw this horrible incident and asked for the officers' information and badge numbers. However they were threatened by the officers to stay out of the situation. This reminded me of an episode of cops I saw where a man was unfairly tasered after cooperating. Police brutality is really a big issue in our country today, the notorious SFPD for example. Even though police is suppose to be the safekeepers of our community, not feared torturers. In fact, police are often found to commit the most extreme cases of violence and discrimination. This case is only one example of much police violence is out there. It just shows how we as human beings can be influences so easily by power, and how poorly shaped our community structure really is. Just because police officers are given the power of guns, badges, and tasers, it doesn't mean they have to use it to such extremity. Read More »
soccer needs to get bigger in the u.s.
soccer needs to become more popular in the u.s. because it's such a great sport. it's the most famous sport in the entire world. so why cant it be famous in America? soccer is the most demanding sport out there. you have to be able to run at least 100yards back and forth for 90minutes a game with people constantly pushing you, elbowing you, and kicking you. you need to have a strong lower body to be able to kick the ball hard and to run for that long. you also need a strong upper body to be able to push people away and not get pushed around. you need strong neck mucsles to be able to head the ball good. soccer also takes a lot of thinking. you pretty much have to know what youre going to do before you even touch the ball. it's kind of like a physical game of chess. it also takes a lot of skill to just get the ball where it really needs to be. above all else soccer is just really fun to play. you sont need much at all. all you need is a round ball and set up two goals which could be made out of practically anything. soccer's the most popular game in the world and America needs to get with the program.
