Here's an inspiring story: In the April 2005 issue of Wired, Joshua Davis reported on a group of high school students who defied all odds and beat the MIT robot team to win the national underwater robot competition.
Four students from the mostly low-income West Phoenix high school didn't care that the odds were stacked against them. They had no money for college, and no idea what would happen after the contest, but they put their brains, hearts, and souls into making the best robot -- and won.
One month after the story hit the newstands, readers had contributed over $57,000 toward a scholarship fund for the four students: Cristian Arcega, Lorenzo Santillan, Luis Aranda, and Oscar Vasquez. And John Wells, executive producer of The West Wing and ER, says that he will produce a movie based on the story.
