Disclaimer: I'm not trying to hurt any feelings in this blog. :)
Music has always been one of the biggest influences on our society. Who's to say that all of it is good? Putting in the headphones usually means you want to be in your own "little world." Does this mean that even good music can be a bad thing by separating us from our social life? When you plug in the headphones you are ignoring the world, even though our world revolves around music! Everywhere you go there is music. Imagine yourself walking into the store Zumiez. You are immediately in a "punk rock" world with loud music and nice people that tend to scare the young (I'm not saying these people are bad people, I'm just saying that an outward appearance can send out the wrong impression of even the nicest people). Can an outward appearance send out the wrong message? Our style tends to show the kind of music we listen to (that and our personalities). For example: I break-dance and therefore have the wrist bands and bandanas and baggy pants to go with my style. My personality is very strong based and I'm not afraid to tell people exactly how I'm feeling. All this comes from listening to hip hop music. This same theory could be said about my best friend Todd, who listens to soft rock such as Secondhand Serenade. He dresses like a "preppie" and is very nice to everyone he sees. He's pleasant to be around while sometimes I can be hard to deal with. So if music influences our style, our personalities and how we do things... couldn't music also influence us to do certain things that we know can hurt us? The Beatles (as much as I love them) were a big influence for free sex and drug abuse in the 60's. They started the "Hippie age". Now let's define a hippie. Tie dye shirt, flip flops, torn jeans, very easy going, easy to get along with....and in the case of the sixties...very high. I'm not saying all hippies do, but that's the stereotype that was set in the sixties. Even though The Beatles have great music, they hurt our society in a way and only helped us in one way really: The evolution of rock into what it is today. So what is music doing to the youth of our generation? Look around you. Ask questions. Listen to the music and make your decision.
Is Music helping us? Or is it hurting us?

Music could never hurt.

I honestly think its the interpretation of the music, more the lyrics then the music itself. Lets put it this way, you cant blame a rap CD on why you commited a crime, anymore then you can blame the sun for a sunburn. You should know better enought to put on sun block, just as much as you should know its wrong to commit a crime. Music doesnt make people do he things they do, people chose to do the things they do and blame it on music.
