Is the world coming to an end? A lot of people seem to think so. Whether in a spectacular war that will end in a nuclear explosion, or in a slow descent where humanity turns on their neighbors and even there own family in a fight for survival and precious resources, the opinion that the end is near is on a noticeable rise.
I visited PeakOil.com today, which is a website devoted to the concern of the dwindling carbon supply in the world. Many of the people that frequent the site are survivalists, stocking up on essentials, learning to farm and survive on the bare necessities in order to prepare themselves for the inevitable. I prepared myself for rambling crazies when i heard about this site, but they were all surprisingly reasonable. While some may see the irony in a group of people with no faith in or use for technology( its all going to be useless when the world ends) having a webpage, it is after all the only way to really reach people nowadays. They post information on the growing problem, the inadequacy of the governments in the world to address it. However, unlike these people, i cannot simply stock up and run as a solution to this problem. Because that is not solution at all. It does lessen the usage of oil, in at tiny insignificant way, but the problem is still there. Worse, its growing.
We need an alternative power solution that can actually work. Fusion? Fission? Too dangerous. Hydrogen? Possible, if we had addressed this problem 50 years ago ( the est plans for hydrogen power have us eginning to implement this as a main power source in 2015 at best). ZPE? Only if we want to take the entire galaxy with us when we explode. That's if we could figure out how that works. Lets face it people, we got nothing. And that little fact makes running and hiding, leaving this problem to someone else a damn attractive idea. Because until we are on the verge of destruction, or even in the process of being destroyed( and who's to say that we're not already?), the government will do nothing. Oil is big business. Alternative power sources, as they are don't even make a dent in the coffers of those with their hands on the government's leash. And as long as there's no problem, for them at least, those hands are going to stay firmly on those leashes, while we all burn. In a gas flame of course.
