I am no fan of religion. I wish there were an outbreak of rationality and it would die. Die not because anybody restricted anybody's right to practice it. But die, because of the realization that it is not needed.
But it IS needed ... or so people claim. Religion is good ... or so people claim. The bad comes from the lunatic fringe that actually believe the bible means it when Exodus, Leviticus, or Deuteronomy says to kill people for minor offenses. Good ole' moderate religion is all for peace and love .... right? Well, not always.
University of Central Florida student, Webster Cook, was thought well enough by his peers to be elected to the Student Senate. But evidently Webster can be a bit rude as well. Webster objected Student Government funds going to religious organizations (over $40,000 for the 2007-2008 school year). At one such event a Catholic mass was held in the Student Union. Webster, raised a Catholic, decided to attend. During the mass a ritual was held ... the Eucharist ... and Webster absconded with an uneaten wafer.
Stories differ as to the exact detail. Was Webster obnoxious during the service? Perhaps he was, perhaps he wasn't. Did the church officials try to use force to get the wafer back from Webster? Perhaps so, perhaps not. But what is known is that Webster got death threats from Catholics AROUND THE WORLD. All because he kidnapped a fucking cracker?? What kind of lunacy is this? The answer, of course, is obvious. It is religious lunacy. And religious lunacy in the most mainstream sect of all Christianity.
But wait a second ... I'm not being understanding. The Eucharist has special significance for Catholics. It is a ceremony that supposedly dates back to the Last Supper:
Then [Jesus] took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to [the disciple], saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
The wafer is the equivalent the loaf of bread. It is Jesus' body ... metaphorically of course. Well, maybe not so metaphorically for Catholics. The official teaching of Catholicism is that the wafer is transubstantiated into the actual body of Christ. So the Catholics who are threatening Webster's life, view Webster as having performed a hate crime and actually took Christ's body hostage:
"We don't know 100% what Mr. Cooks motivation was," said Susan Fani a spokesperson with the local Catholic diocese. "However, if anything were to qualify as a hate crime, to us this seems like this might be it."
So doesn't this make their actions more understandable?
Before I answer, let me present you with a riddle:
Suppose you believe a tail to be a leg, how many legs does a dog have?
The answer is FOUR ... believing a tail to be a leg doesn't make it a leg.
Believing the wafer becomes the actual body of Christ doesn't make the wafer become the actual body of Christ. It is incredibly STUPID of one to believe that it actually does. It is a FUCKING CRACKER and nothing more. You are a dimwitted piece of shit to threaten a person's life because they took a cracker. How much more specific can I be?
But wait, the lunacy doesn't stop there. PZ Myers is a biology professor at the University of Minnesota - Morris. He is also the top science blogger on the web and a very vocal atheist. He recently wrote a blog ... much like this one ... in which he takes the Catholic wackaloons to task for their silly belief. Myers showed his utter disrespect (deservedly so, in my mind) for this stupid belief by saying:
So, what to do. I have an idea. Can anyone out there score me some consecrated communion wafers? There's no way I can personally get them — my local churches have stakes prepared for me, I'm sure — but if any of you would be willing to do what it takes to get me some, or even one, and mail it to me, I'll show you sacrilege, gladly, and with much fanfare. I won't be tempted to hold it hostage (no, not even if I have a choice between returning the Eucharist and watching Bill Donohue kick the pope in the balls, which would apparently be a more humane act than desecrating a goddamned cracker), but will instead treat it with profound disrespect and heinous cracker abuse, all photographed and presented here on the web. I shall do so joyfully and with laughter in my heart. If you can smuggle some out from under the armed guards and grim nuns hovering over your local communion ceremony, just write to me and I'll send you my home address.
Guess what ... now Myers is getting death threats of his very own (along with an e-mail campaign to get him fired).
Come on people ... Get in touch with reality. IT IS A FUCKING CRACKER.

LOL....I originally clicked on this because I figured a description of a wackaloon would be entertaining.
So, what kind of cracker is Jesus? If he's a wheat thin, this is somewhat understandable. Wheat thins are really freaking good.

I don't think I've ever seen you use the word Fucking so much in one sitting. Actually, I don't think I've seen you use it so much in any previous sittings combined.
:bows:
It's the awesomeness! And absolutely totally deserved here. If you're ignorant enough to send death threats over something like this... a few fuckings (the word!) in response is probably beyond being in order.

Thanks,
You're right. I think words have a meaning. I don't think one should use profanity lightly. I chose the word specifically to emphasize the banality of what some people are sending death threats over. I considered several other phrases but I felt that this phraseology conveyed my outrage at the situation.

I keep hearing this story and all I can think of is Dane Cook singing "it's time for yummm yummmmms! Let's have snaaaack!... Oh, Lord's a little stale today..."
re-fucking-diculous (the situation, not the blog... also, "ridiculous" spelled correctly looks funny with the "-fucking-" added in ::shrug:

It seems everybody was wrong. If Webster was raised a Catholic, he should have known better than to do something Catholics would consider offensive. But as offensive as it might be to some, death threats were completely unnecessary.
In just about any situation in which there is conflict, all parties have done something in which was probably unwise. One can point those problems out and the implication is that each side is equally at fault. But that is not necessarily warranted.
Webster Cook took a wafer. That may have been unwise. It disturbed a religious ceremony which was undoubtedly rude. However, that pales in significance to DEATH THREATS. Not only that, but the priest compared Webster's act to kidnapping of a human being. An official spokesperson for the Church called it a hate crime. Bill Donohue, the head of the Catholic League, said that Webster had desecrated the body of Christ. Nope ... Webster took a cracker.

How did they find out anyway?
How did who find out what? The Catholic church find out that Webster took the wafer?
The stories differ. Webster claims that when he was given the cracker a person at the church tried to force him to give it back if he wasn't going to eat it. The Church claims that Webster was rude and obnoxious during the service.

Oops. Sorry. I just realized how vague the question was. But yes, what I meant was how did everybody find out about Webster taking it.
That situation is ridiculous. I really don't get why there would be death threats being thrown around. But then again, I suppose that's why I'm not Catholic.
But I have one question. Why did you begin your blog saying that you wish religion in general would die, and then only talk about Catholicism? I know many Christians of Protestant denominations would agree that sometimes, Catholics can get a little overzealous and even downright ridiculous. And from reading your first paragraph, I was expecting a a little more than some Catholic-bashing (for lack of the ability to think of a better term...).
And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

I'll be sure to check them out... eventually.
I've officially gone on a vacation from reading any and all blogs that have to deal with religion, after having my feathers ruffled one too many times. Need to back off before I start saying irrational things, you know? So, I'll be back to read some of them... eventually. ^-^

The Story of Myself
This happened at UCF? I go there! I'm not there now, though, which may be why I didn't hear about it. We do have a ridiculous amount of religious groups on campus who are always holding prayer circles and sitting at tables offering "Free Prayer." And here I thought they were harmless...

You are a masochist. It hurt for me to just try to read what he had to say, let alone discern anything (especially sense) from his blather.
