One of the classes I took this past semester was management 100: leadership and communication in groups. While it was a really fun class, I would often sit and wonder what the purpose of this class was. We were put on a team of 9 or 10 random people and given a client who assigned us a project. It was great because they were all community based and it was a nice way of giving back to the community. We had to learn how to delegate tasks to get the job done and work as a team. At times it was difficult, but it was a learning process. In class we did random group building assignments and we would discuss articles that we had to read.
We killed the topic of leadership. Everything was based upon that, however I do think my view of a leader has changed. That class teaches you a great deal about yourself and you learn things you never thought you would. It was kind of weird. It’s crazy how there are multiple types of leaders that are all important. You can’t just have 10 strong headed people because that will not work. You need a diverse group of people to be the most productive team. Things just kind of flow better that way. You need the headstrong people to give the group some sort of direction. However you need the smart, quiet individuals who are compromising because they go along with the idea, yet they are perceptive enough to see what is going on and point out a way that might be better.
