The environment. You don't have to be a Planeteer tree-hugging eco hippie to care about the environment. But the issue can be exaggerated, turning its followers into fanatic believers who reject any evidence that counters their preset world view. Of course I am talking about Global Warming. We "unbelievers" who deny the existence of man-made climate change are ostracized by many as nut jobs, making it easier for them to disregard any evidence we might present that discounts the theory of climate change. No matter what Al Gore may tell you, this issue has not been set to rest. If you look at many of the graphs that show Earth's average temperatures, they look very convincing. The lines that depict temperature have risen dramatically in the last hundred years.
But that's the problem. They only show Earth's average temperature change in the last hundred years. If you then look at a graph that shows the temperature from say, 10,000 BC to today, you will see that the change is not very dramatic. We do not live in a static climate. Earth's temperature is dependent on how close or far Earth is from the Sun [yes, we wobble], how many sunspot are on the Sun [more sunspots mean more solar activity, leading to more energy reaching the earth and a higher overall temperature], and the amount of volcanic activity. Yes, we are releasing large amounts of C02 into the air, and it is a greenhouse gas. And yes, I do believe that has contributed to the rise in temperature. But not by very much. It's like dumping a glass of milk into a lake. The effect, though detectable, is so insignificant that it will not make much of a difference. On top of that, we have just left the little Ice Age.
Why was Greenland called Greenland? Why did the Vikings die out in North America? Why did the Black Death occur? They are all related to the Little Ice Age. About 1000 years ago the Sun cooled slightly, causing Earth's temperature to drop very quickly. This lead to the Viking outposts in Greenland and North America to die out because of a drop in temperature, and lead small rodents, including rats, to be driven into towns, which increased contact with the fleas that carried the bubonic plague. The Themes river in England would freeze over, something that had never occurred prior to the Little Ice Age, and something that does not occur now that we have left it. The climate is warming precisely because the Little Ice Age has ended. And the hysteria that follows global warming is ridiculous. When hurricane Katrina hit, people screamed about how this was the beginning of an age filled with massive hurricanes and other natural disasters that were caused by global warming. And now, 3 years later, we have not seen any significant hurricanes.
Now how does this relate to policy? The democrats have been in an uproar since Bush vetoed [thank God] the Kyoto protocol. This would have limited our CO2 emissions drastically over the next 20 years, which would have crippled our business sectors. And the most incredible part of this agreement was that it excluded China and India, two of the largest CO2 producers. So while we are trying to compete with the rising Asian economic giants, we would be crippled by these disastrous emission standards which is supposed to fight something that hasn't even been proven. The democrats are also against drilling in a frozen chunk of land called ANWAR. They say that it would tarnish the environment, but, if ANWAR was the size of a tennis court, we would only be drilling in an area the size of a sheet of paper. By drilling in ANWAR we would also be able to become less reliant on foreign, mostly Middle Eastern, sources of fuel.
We should focus on American innovation and the free market, working with companies by giving subsides to businesses that invest in alternative fuels, which, in time, will be able to wean us off of oil. By releasing us from this stranglehold oil producing nations have us in, we will be making the air cleaner while strengthening our foreign policy position. The radical sheiks and mullahs will no longer have their vast oil fortunes that they can use to fund terrorists that then attack us and our allies.
And btw. Zephyr Aurion made me title this "polar bears consummate too". not my idwa lol
