Great! Now, what do you think?

Perhaps the most bothersome thing about politics is the people who barge in like thay know things but really have done little or no research of their own.

I am so sick of hearing the opinions of the people around me the opinions of the parents of the people around me. So often I hear the arguements people's parents have laid out, or their teachers, or simply what they hear other people saying. Sure, if the opinion you hold is the same as your parent's or teacher's or the masses, great. But figure it out for yourself. Its clear when someone goes on about a current social issue - abortion, gay marriage, and bush-bashing seem to be popular, but are only drops in the sea of student ignorance - but then you ask the person a question about it and they cant support their claims at all! I think this is so frustrating. It promotes a lack of interest and involvement in our political system!

Thats why I am so thrilled to see websites like this or attend Speech and Debate events or read about students who actually care. I relish discussions with other students who clearly know at least something substancial about their issues. No, I don't expect anyone to become an expert on every topic, just figure some things out for yourself!

I share a lot of opinons with my parents. Its because they  raised me. I share many of their values and morals and have grown up with certain viewponts and social conditions. But I read. I study. I try to understand. And when I hear my parent's discussing a topic, I have no problem challenging them when I tihnk they are wrong or questioning them when I don't follow their logic. I'd nevevote on party lines just because my parents are Republicans or support a candidate just becuase they say the person is good.

So take the imput of those around you, but don't just listen to one side of an issue - your parent's side. Read some news articles, discuss with multiple teachers, question your parents. That way, we might actually begin to hear your opinions for once.
