Mandatory driving tests for seniors

I think that there should be more requirements and tests for seniors who get behind the wheel of a car. No offense against grandma or grandpa, but there are significant health effects that go along with aging. Reaction time, night vision, and motor skills are often the first to deteriorate.

Without periodic driving tests, the negative effects of aging drivers can often go unchecked. There are often times when I myself have seen seniors driving on the roads who obviously should not be able to do so. It seems like authorities are always really quick to impose restrictions and crack down on young and teen drivers, but ignore the important aspects of aging that become liabilities on the road.

We’ve all been there—you’re going like 60 on the highway, and little grandma up there merges into traffic going like 20 mph. And often, seniors may not park their cars as straight or evenly as they used to probably be able to. This is perfectly understandable, when you think that their vision and reaction time has probably waned a bit. Some seniors may not be able to read street signs very well either. As civil as I want to treat our elderly, we also have to consider that there are other drivers on the roads, and we need to draw the line between competence and liability.

I would say every 2-5 years, seniors beginning at ages 65-70 should check in for a simple drive test. It should test things like vision, night vision, reaction time, ability to read signs, speed, parking, and abidance by the rules of the road. Some of these capabilities DO deteriorate with age, and I think that simple tests should be imposed to protect seniors and other drivers on the roads.
