With a break from work and college courses that I take every other night of the week, I sat at home tonight while it snowed outside; I thought I would be in for a relaxing night of entertainment. I had another thing coming.
Sitting down to watch one of my favorite guilty pleasures, Grey's Anatomy, my dad made a comment that first sounded ultra-conservative and, oh...just a little bit old-fashioned. It made me think though.
He half-jokingly (as a cusser himself) noted that the show throws around the word 'ass' pretty liberally. I have no problem with that, but I used to...what's changed?
Media seems to be desensitizing its viewers to things that were once deemed "inappropriate" or at least taboo. Now, it's no shocking thing to watch prime time TV and be blasted with words and images and ideas that just aren't as wholesome as they used to be.
What happened to shows like Boy Meets World that were once well accepted by the general public? They've gone to stations like the Disney channel aimed at younger audiences. Will the same thing happen with shows like Grey's Anatomy? Will my kids or theirs being watching surgery shows and asking me what an ass is?
I hope that watching the show and being immersed in its ideas won't make one of me.

When I was little and that was less than 10 years ago. Words like ass and bitch and damn were considered taboo. The radio did not use those words at all. Than all of a sudden damn came out. LYrics had it in them and the Djs were saying it than ass came than bitch. No it doesnt bother me but i still think backto when i could listen to the radio without cursing.
BTW I love Greys Anatomy.
