It's been a frequent heartache for me.
I'm one of those kids who loves jazz, old-timey standards with an up-to-date flare... the kind you can only find in smokey jazz clubs, on cruise ships, and occasionally in Market Square. I'll admit it... I'm a fanatic. An absolute fanatic. And it absolutely kills me that I'm not eighteen at the present moment, because...
Yes, you guessed it. There are no jazz bands performing at any ordinary hour of the evening anywhere a sixteen [almost seventeen] year old girl can go. And so I honestly am fed up with the difficulties of finding a jazz club that actually allows me to enter.
Dinner tonight was at one of the best restaraunts I've been to in a while, and it was open-mic night. Me being myself, I decided to jump up and sing with the band, and surprisingly enough... they liked me! They want me to come back next week, and I believe I will. The best thing about this is the fact that although they tend to play more rock-n-roll old school funk, they also know their jazz. Like, they REALLY know their jazz. And so I sang four songs with them, and it was incredible.
So here are my thoughts. I'm wondering if there's any possible way to convince any nearby restaraunt to hold an open-mic night once a week or so. The thing is--well, I have all the makings for a fabulous jazz band. A pianist, a bassist, a drummer, and a saxaphonist, and then, of course, a vocalist. I could be on to something!
Basicly, I need to jump on it. Take a stand. Us poor underage highschoolers... we can't really do anything to defend ourselves! And if I can pull off a major auction to raise money for someone, then I can do anything, right?
Right.
So someone tell me. This is what I'm supposed to do, right?

You may as well play a bit on the street in warm weather. Get outside. Who needs a club, sister?

i think it's a shame that there isn't any place around that is inviting to young jazz enthusiasts as yourself. however, maybe you can find other places besides jazz clubs, like a coffee shop.
