Don't Chew The Chocolate

Have you ever noticed the different uses for chocolate, and the different ways people consume it? Chocolate is a comfort food for many - sorry lactose intolerant people - and can be a pleasurable experience at any time. At any one time in a person's life, they either chew their chocolate or they savor it. Sometimes it's a subconcious act that can say what a person is really feeling or how his or her life is going.

First, let's talk about those that savor their chocolate. Granted, most chocolates require some amount of chewing, but the Savorers take time to enjoy each mouthful before they send it down their throats. They move the chocolate around their mouths, letting the sweet taste take them over and give them a temporary release. The Savorers are comfortable and happy, though the chocolate can definatly be the cause of these feelings. They have time to spare, or at least, allow themselves a time to relax during the hectic lives most people lead.

Now, the Chewers. Contrary to the Savorers, the Chewers are either in a hurry or stressed or depressed. They consume their chocolate quickly, wanting the chocolate to calm them or give them some pleasure, but they swallow it before ample time is allowed for any sort of enjoyment. Often the consumption of it is more of a force of habit than anything else. They are not happy, or are "too busy for happiness". Difficult or hectic events in a person's life can unfortunatly turn almost anyone from a Savorer to a Chewer.

Where am I going with all of this? I love chocolate myself; the very thought of it can often make me smile. But there are times when I turn to chocolate when I'm stressed or depressed, and devour it quickly. I want the satisfaction of chocolate without giving it time to work its magic. Sometimes I realize what I'm doing and stop a moment to think. Much of my life is crazy enough that I shouldn't try and rush the one simple pleasure I can enjoy anytime, anywhere. There is nothing guilty or pointless in this pleasure, so it need not be quickly eaten and leave one unsatisfied.

Maybe it is the excess of chocolate in the world that makes people consume it so quickly. Thus, they eat it in larger quantities and that, perhaps, is the only guilt that follows chocolate. How can anything rushed be worth it? How can forcing chocolate down one's throat lead to any sort of contentment?

Don't be a Chewer. Enjoy every chance to have chocolate that comes your way as if it is a rare pleasure. Not only will you be taking in less calories by taking your time, you might find you can take a moment to slow down in the midst of chaos. Sometimes the simplest things can have the greatest impact on your mood.

Many dark chocolates do not contain dairy products. I am vegan and can eat some chocolate, but I haven't in a few years now I guess. Anyway, I find the differences you pointed out very interesting. The first group of people, eat theirs mindfully I guess you would say. Apparently, this is the way people are supposed to eat everything, by savoring it, and thinking about the experience, not wolfing it down and then grabbing more because you barely got to enjoy it. These differences could explain why some people can eat chocolate in moderation and why some people binge on it.

I am a savorer. Maybe what you said is true. I must find out! *Eat a chocolate bar* Yummy. It takes be about 2-3 minutes to finish it. lol. I don't get why people chew on chocolate. It makes my teeth feel funny. Oh My God, maybe I have cavities...again!

I hope you don't have cavities! Too much sugar does that...so drink lots of milk! Seriously, I drink milk usually at least twice a day, and I definatly eat my share of chocolate, and I've never gotten a cavity *knock on wood*

I'm glad you all liked it. Thanks for all your comments! I don't know how you could go for a couple yers without chocolate, sodamnbeautiful, but there are definatly a lot of good dark chocolates out there. Technically, studies show they are healthier for you anyway.

Remember, don't chew chocolate.

Maybe why sodamnbeautiful went on a couple of years without chocolate is because she's on a diet (I'm just guessing) because while I was still on a diet, I think I went on two years without chocolate.
