I always thought it stood for the white supremacy and overall hatred but my husband says the confederate flag stands for southern pride, heritage and tradition. He says the Civil War was not fought over slavery and the abolition of slavery was a ploy to kill the South's economy at that time. I asked him why then, is it used by the KKK?
He responded that, "the KKK laid claim to the flag as well as the Bible. They use it use it as representation and misconstrue its meaning completely. Why then, is the Bible not considered a hate relic? The true meaning of the Bible prevails and people actually laugh off the fact that it is used by the KKK to ration their thinking and support their practices. Why then can we not dismiss their claim to the Confederate flag, realizing that the KKK and other supremacy groups are ridiculously misrepresenting it?"
It is hard for me to agree with his view even though he has excellent historical facts to prove his point. I just get a bad feeling about the flag. It scares me and I think it always will. I don't think we'll ever be able to accept it as Americans as having nothing to do with hate. Should it stay in the closet of history or should we be "smart" enough to realize it stands for southern pride?

I live in the south and see this flag constantly and each time i get offened by it. Yes, the confederate flag does represent the South, but it what ways.
The civil war was fought over slavery, that may not have been the "written" down reason but all the others issues the north and south had could have been resolved except for the issue of slavery.
The only South i see the confederate flag representing is one that supported slavery and fought to keep it.

I will always feel uncomfortable with the confederate flag but honestly, the civil war was not fought over slavery. The only reason the north wanted to end it was because they were not making money from it. They saw it as a good way to hurt the southern economy. There is no way they felt the need to have a brother vs brother, fight to the death war over slavery. I will not credit the civil war with that. I am just glad that one of the biproducts turned out to be a good thing. I understand what you said about the flag representing people who supported slavery thought. There were a lot of things they supported and stood for and not all of them were good.
"I always thought it stood for the white supremacy and overall hatred but my husband says the confederate flag stands for southern pride, heritage and tradition."
This is true. But a large part of southern tradition and so on and so forth was built of of the backs of slaves. And as far as the kkk and the bible go.. it's just another hypocritical thing.
