A question that i have had for a while? What is wrong with polygamy? Is it not a personal freedom to marry whomever you wany. I believe that it violates church and state to even suspend someone's right to marry. Also that marriage is a church thing not a governemental action.

They have a HBO show called Big Love on polygamy. i found that very interesting to watch.

Why do people beleive that polygamy is so evil?

All polgsmy is is the practice of marriage to more than one spouse simultaneously. it is funny to me that christians are the ones that find polygamy rhe worst offense but one of the main people in christian text had four wives. Why are people so closed minded to certain issues? No one is attacking you if they want to marry more than one person.

What can i say it is America. Give me some feedback.

Big Love is an HBO series about a polygamous family in Utah in the first decade of the 21st century. In the series, Bill Henrickson has three wives and seven children, who belong to a fundamentalist Mormon splinter group. Big Love explores the complex legal, moral, and religious issues associated with polygamy in Utah. Henrickson's three wives each have separate houses beside one another, with a shared backyard. By outward appearances, he lives with his primary wife, and has two "friends" living close by, while in reality taking turns sleeping at a different house each night. Henrickson effectively balances his work, the continuing demands of his wives, and his wives' relatives.
Thank you wikipedia!

Peace!

I think in general it is looked down upon because it is generally used when men have more power over women and women see it as threatening to their rights. Hugh Hefner's got it down though.

Another good topic.

There have been only a few cases prosecuted within the past 100 years. The judicial decision allowing States to regulate polygamy are so rasist they would most likely have to be struck down if tested:

'in its 1878 opinion in Reynolds vs. United States, the court refused to recognize polygamy as a legitimate religious practice, dismissing it in racist and anti-Mormon terms as "almost exclusively a feature of the life of Asiatic and African people." In later decisions, the court declared polygamy to be "a blot on our civilization" and compared it to human sacrifice and "a return to barbarism." Most tellingly, the court found that the practice is "contrary to the spirit of Christianity and of the civilization which Christianity has produced in the Western World."'

To me any law that oulaws the practice of polygamy between concenting adults would violate first amendment protections for religious freedoms. It also seems to follow IMHO that as laws are inevitably changed to allow same sex marriage that will become precedent to protect polygamist marriage as well. I am no lawyer, so my opinion has little weight.

How could the current prohibitions be anything but religious persecution.
As many as 50,000 polygamists live in the United States.

A fact is always better than an ideal
