America in the sixties. Pretty crazy from what I heard. But the important thing that the counter culture did was open up America's eyes and brought in a whole bunch of political reform. Unfortunately, with all this eye opening a vast majority of people did not like what they saw. And so 40 years passed and today we are left with the two polar opposites that arose in the sixties.
Today's political climate is just that, too polar. You are either for tax cuts or tax hikes, for abortion or against it, for war or anti-war. Because of the discourse during the sixties politicians today can not agree on much, besides that the other party is wrong. And it is not so much wrong as it is evil. Politicians think they are fighting a war against opposing parties, always thinking they are the good guy fighting the bad. What they seem to have forgotten is that we are America, one country filled with millions of different people but in the end, one country. There are good Americans and bad Americans just like there are good Iraqis and bad ones. But this is not a country of people who are right and people who are wrong. Ideas do not need to be on the left or on the right but instead should be a perfect blending of the two. That is what politicians forget, that they are supposed to be working together with other congressman (or whatever) to better the country. Now they just want to have a majority and push their ideas forward. Who cares who has a majority, why can't they say "well that's a good bill; it should pass because it is good." Politics needs to take a few steps back and realize that this is one country not lefties vs. righties, not good v. evils. We are Americans and I think we should be able to work together.
Have a nice day
