PROM MADNESS!

Does anyone know how the whole idea of prom ever began? If you do, do you know if they ever intended prom to get this much hype? I'm not saying that anything is wrong the excitement of prom. I'm excited for my senior prom that is coming up in a couple of proms. But think about it, prom is just like any other dance.

My problem with prom is all of the stress and time that gets put into it. There is a constant search for not just a date, but for the "perfect" date. Also, not for a dress, but for the "perfect" dress. Money is spent on tickets, hair, shoes, makeup, the dress,... and don't forget the limo. Is all of this honestly that worth it?

I think that students should have a special moment such as this one to celebrate and remember forever, but should it honestly cost this much. Should more time be dedicated to it than the time spent at the dance itself?

My friend and I are currently planning a drive at our school to collect old dresses to give away to teenage girls who were thinking about not going to the prom simply because they couldn't afford a dress. People, I am not saying that prom iteself is bad, I'm simply saying that it seems to have become very very materialistic. And go without a date if you don't have one!!! Who cares!!! When you are older you might regret not going simply because you didn't have a date. I know many people who wished they had just went with their friends.

Please tell me what you think! I am anxious do know others opinions on this topic!

Prom is a silly, silly tradition. Every time I think about it I just want to laugh at how absolutely ridiculous it is. America is such a strange place.

Personally, I love Prom! And Homecoming, and Winterball, and then DJ'ing for the Middle Level dances in between!!! But, I also have either bought all my dresses from thrift stores, or payed less than $20 for it. I also refuse to spend large amounts of money or time on the whole ordeal.... And generally find dates the day before, or just go with friends. Alright... Perhaps I like my version of prom better than the real one.

I LOVE your idea of the dress drive! I started something similar at my school, but tweaked it a little. I was afraid that taking a collection of dresses, and donating them to girls who can't afford them, would make them feel like charity cases, and simply further discourage them from attending. Instead, I decided to do a dress exchange, where a bunch of people bring their old dresses that they don't want to ever wear again, and then everyone is invited to go browse for a new dress... That way no feels bad for getting their dress for free, and everyone (not just the finacially deprived) gets a new, cute, worn once dress!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to senior prom too, but it's going to be so much less fun if my friends don't come, and many of them are planning not to. Finances can be a big thing, I think that the dress drive you guys did is an awesome idea, but if you don't go all out it's possible to have a great time without breaking the bank. The other issue is dates. Last year I took a friend of a friend who I barely knew, which sounds like a recipe for disaster but worked out perfectly. He looked good in the pictures and was friends with other girls' dates so I could ditch him to dance with my friends :-) I know I'd regret not going if I hadn't.

Prom was NOTHING where I am.

I didn't even bother to go.

Even though I made a spectacular dress that I have yet to wear...

Prom isn't so coveted everywhere. Here, no one really cares.
