There is a new legislature being put forth in the state of Washington that may ban booing at high school sporting events. This is something I really can't wrap my head around, no matter how hard I try. Most of the time when there is booing at high school sporting events, it is aimed towards a bad call or towards an intolerable action. What the legistlation is aiming to do is encourage sportsmanship on the part of the crowd and minimize the verbal abuse coming from the crowd. This is just the next step in preventing our children from realizing the way the world works. If you do something poorly or you mess up, you will be criticized, fairly or unfairly and people need to learn how to deal with it. High school athletes are learning the spirit of teamwork, discipline, and hard work while they're playing their respective sports. They're also learning how to deal with adversity and critical judgement. Taking away booing is not only unfair to the spectators, but it's also unfair to the players.

I have heard the news about the booing band (I live in Seattle), and didn't think too much of it until reading your blog.
You have a valid point about these kids not learning how the world works.
Preventing students from being jackasses is important, because not being a jackass is a valuable lifeskill, important to life in a professional environment.
