Blinded by the Fog of War

Caius Lex's picture

The fog of war has not cleared, nor the blinding dust of youthful brash adventure settled. Genocide is no prelude to democracy. Occupation is no precursor to freedom or peace. We ourselves are a democracy in its infancy, yet we are a democracy at war. And it is true, oh all too true that young democracies have the greatest tendencies to war against other democracies...and the irony is our invasion of Iraq, an intended democracy.

And did we blind ourselves with illusions of grandeur
To the scale which Napoleon himself could not imagine

And did we betray our souls to our adversaries when we lost our ways and forgot our own dear values

Did we gain in our financial ambitions at the loss of our moral and philosophical goods?

And did we lose ourselves within ourselves
And close our eyes to the world

Are we not blind at the present moment
In every which direction
Which we choose...

We increasingly so
Are a nation at the crossroads
In quest of its own history
A rediscovery of its own identity

Am I wrong?
