Tragic Radicals

Petty Piper's picture

I was digging in my garden earlier today and the thought came to me that the life and perspective of a radical is both bright and disheartening. They are idealists, all radicals: be they radical left liberals that believe all animals should be free, or radical right conservatives who believe no woman should work outside the home. A radical is the most piteous of creatures; someone so caught up in their idealism, so confounded by the ways of the world that they retreat to a mindset that potentially smooths everything out. A radical always has someone to blame, always has an enemy, and is always working for a just and rightous cause.

Of course, I say this with no sarcasm or deciet; I myself display idealistic and radical points of view on many subjects in this world. It is human nature, to desire that which we percieve as perfect.

And it is that unwavering devotion to ideals that make the radicals to tragic. Because, while they do not have to worry about living life as a responsible human since all error in the world can be faulted to the inferior system, they do have to live with the enormous burden of desiring what can never be achieved. They work to make the world a better place, only half-aware that they themselves will never see the new world they create. If that world was ever created, anyway. Because the way that life flows, everything remains balanced; radical left battles radical right for middle and moderate ground. A battle of fire & ice produces only lukewarm water.

This, then, is the spawning ground for terrorism. The idea that, through random acts of violence, these radicals can get one-up on the other radicals, and persuade the lukewarm staus-quo to their temperature. Of course, this must be retaliated, by the opposite sect of radicals.

And thus the cycle of the tragic radicals.
