The Ballad of Steroids and Professional Wrestling

Hmmmm...  Steroids in professional wrestling.  This is a history topic gone renewed.  A topic that started in the early nineties with focus on wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, and Jim "Ultimate Warrior" Helwig has been brought back to the mainstream since the tragic deaths of Chris Benoit and his family.  What should be done?  In a blurry reality where an athlete/actor can take on who he/she portrays in the ring, can we honestly recognise a problem?  Or because wrestling is not an actual sport we can stand back, while talent of promotions such as World Wrestling Entertainment abuses performance enhancing drugs.  I agree that there is a problem with steroid abuse in the wrestling community.  However, I do not think we can look at so called lists of "steroid related" deaths that Fox News posts together as an actual fact.  If you look, you will find names such as Owen Hart who passed away from an accident involving a stunt.  Brian Pillman is on the list, however it was cause by a life-long heart condition.  There were countless overdoses on drugs other than steroids.  If they mentioned drugs in general, I could take Fox News and Nancy Grace seriously... but with lists of wrestlers of causes other than examples such as enlarged hearts from steroids (ie: "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith and Eddie Guerrero) just to make a list seem large is ridiculous and unprofessional.  It is also a ploy by corporate media to swing viewers to their beliefs.  I do agree with congressional intervention in the professional wrestling world.  This is a good start to protect performers and show good examples to younger viewers.   There also needs to be a union for professional wrestlers and a health commission.  I can't say that the head honcho of wrestling today, Vince McMahon, is the cause for wrestlers taking steroids.  However, he should have been more aggressive with the health concerns of his talent.

I agree with you about the WWE management and Vince McMachon taking on a more aggressive role, because at the end if one of their people die, you know they will no doubt go to him (or them) first. But at the end of the day everyone is responsible for their own actions.
