So the cease fire is off, and after 16 months of a formalized agreement between Hamas and the Israeli people, a very controversial explosion has set the wheels of violence in motion again. The story goes like this: there were families situation on a beach. Palestinian families. Near by, Israeli fighters and Palestinian fighters were exchanging rocket fire (an interesting activity given the cease-fire). The original version of the story, when it was first release from Middle-Eastern sources, was that an Israeli rocket had obliterated the people. This was the pretext used to attack Israeli interests following the incident.
New information, released by Israel (so we should, of course, maintain a sense of the fact that they are actively involved in this scenario when admitting it as evidence), allows people to claim that the shrapnel was not consistent with Israeli rockets, but, rather, with Palestinian explosives. Obviously, if the people were killed with Palestinian weaponry, everything changes (except not really, because the cease-fire has already been broken).
In addition, the MSNBC article contains a line that bears further examiniation: "Hamas immediately blamed Israel, called off a 16-month truce and swore revenge." This is consistent with the information that I presented earlier in this post, but the description leads one to wonder, "By what right does Hamas swear revenge in this situation?" There are two possibile descriptions of the events; in one case, a Palestinian explosive killed the people, and in the other, an Israeli rocket killed the people... a rocket that was fired during a conflict with Palestinians, who were returning fire. Even if an Israeli rocket is to blame for the deaths, the Palestinian reaction in this case is akin to a child who hits his brother, is punched in return, and then starts a full fleged brawl with righteous indignation.
