Things You Learn In College

In the first couple days of attending a college or university you can learn a lot about college life. For example:

1. Microwaves aren't an amenity. They're a lifeline. Sometimes, it's okay to just stay in the dorm for certain meals and all-too-common snacktimes.

2. It IS possible to get your school's name on anything; clothes, notebooks, coffee mugs, waffles....Colleges appear to be the most narcissistic self-advertisers.

3. Just because it's college doesn't mean you've escaped all the morons in high school. They migrate in the fall in small packs (commonly refered to as "cliques" or "homies".). The Gansta is a creature with a growing habitat and may reside in your own town. Beware of them, for they have poor grammar.

4. You can and will have to buy books that are $90. And then, when you sell them back, they mysteriously become obsolete and your return bonus is only $7.

5. Hindsight and it's advantages/disadvantages seems more common in college when you've forgotten something. ...wait, what did I forget?

6.Just because you're reading the text doesn't mean you have any idea what you've read. Seriously, this obliviousness can last for pages, and that can be detrimental to a limited study time.

7. Just because you CAN have ice cream doesn' tmean you should. C'mon, don't waste the vanilla.

8. Procrastination is a disease that spreads faster and is more common than the flu. Try not to catch it, as it's very difficult to cure yourself of.

9. Suddenly, that awkward feeling of being the new kid returns ...only now instead of learning the names of 30 homeroom students, you'll see thousands of new faces.

10. Challenges include: Harder classes, new faces, living in a strange structure called a dormitory, drivers that are as bad or worse than their high school equivalents, people who drink too much, and crazy squirrels that will dart across your path and give you dirty looks.

I hope you find this quick guide to college life to be insightful, truthful, and....aw heck, I'll procrastinate and finish the rest of this sentence later!

Great blog. I have to say, I'm pretty amused at what you've come up with. And I have to agree about # 8...procrastination, like a disease..yeah I think I have another form of procrastination right now called senioritis. I hate it, but It's something I'm going to have to cure before this september.

Your squirrels give you dirty looks?

At Arizona State, there are signs warning about birds. Because the birds on campus will, purposely, fly into you (especially your face). While you're walking. They're INSANE.

It's not just squirrels.

I'm guessing there are signs because someone had a bird fly into them and they bitched about it to their helicopter parents who filed a complaint for their adult students. Because the signs are a fairly recent addition to the campus; the birds (and sometimes bats at night) are not. :-P

Good blog. :-)

Kamikaze birds! Wow, our squirrels aren't that crazy, they just like to flirt with death by dashing out into the street at the last second. Or they just seem to watch you as you walk past....

but no, they don't attack us. Well, they haven't yet.

Although I do not actually GO to college I still am a college student. Many people think I am taking the easy way out. But I am not. I have heard it is harder to take classes online. Now I do not know if this is true but I feel it is just as hard. I do procrastionate...but I have always done that. I think my brain doesn't want to face what I have to do.

I also will read a whole chapter and take a quiz and I am like wait a minute I never read about that. Teachers try to trick you by wording the quizzes bassawkwards. It annoys me because if I do not retain the information the first time when I read it, studying won't help this problem. It normally will make it worse.

One of my books was 175 dollars. I not going to bother selling a few of them back because unlike most people I am strange and I find that the books may come in handi, not all of them but the classes I had an interest in.

Whether online is harder than in class depends entirely on the person. Personally, I prefer the self-pace-ness of online classes (I've done both online and onsite classes).

I'm also in the same boat as you - studying more just makes things worse for tests for me. :)

They tried to persuade me not to do it because they said a freshman never does good in those classes. I like it alot because I feel like I am on my own and don't have any distractions from other people.

I also have generalized anixety so I have done bad in normal classes.

I thought I was the only one who did not benefit from studying. :)

I took a few Internet college courses during high schools but attend an "onsite" university now so I can compare and contrast. Personally, both require a lot of disclipline and organizational skills. The Internet classes only get hard when you procrastinate too long...which I often did!
