I was searching all day for scholarships, and I'm frustrated beyond belief. I need scholarship money to be able to get all the way through to med school. For med school, I will probably need to take out loans, but that's another blog post.
Anyway, I found maybe a dozen or so really neat scholarships, ones you need to write essays for. As I was looking through the requirements (must be xxx words in length, student must have 0.0 GPA, must be under 21) I found a requirement that I'm not particularly fond of: must be Hispanic/African-American/Indian/Asian/Anything-But-White.
I understand that, statistically, many African-American and Hispanic students aren't from the most priviliged backgrounds, but come on! It's okay for a scholarship to state that applicants must be black, but all sorts of trouble would be raised if a scholarship was only for white people. I searched for scholarships for white people (excuse me... CAUCASIANS. Political correctness. Bah.) and found nothing. Well, except for a scholarship sponsored by some white supremacist group.
Note to scholarship maker people: Whitey wants to go to school too!

Us poor middle class raised white kids that can't get through college. What a great reward for our grandparents who forced our parents to go to high school and college.
I am having difficulty paying for my undergrad program. School is costing a lot more than the fund my parents set up for me.
Good luck to you though

Good luck to you too! If it comes down to it, maybe I can sell a kidney or something. Or take out a loan. Either one.
I understand this situation all too well.... luckily for me I ran for a county fair queen title and got a good chump of change to use my first 2 years. I am tired of coming across scholarships that discriminate by race. And from my knowledge, and yes I could be wrong, but a majority of the blacks have just started going to college in what the last 20 years? yes/no?
good luck on finding some scholarships, try fastweb if you haven't already.... it will find scholarships for you that meet your criteria.
I AM SORRY BUT THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE THE ADVANCE SEARCH ENGINE ON THE SITES SO THAT YOU CAN PLACE IN DIFFERENT THINGS IN THERE SO THAT IT WILL EITHER GIVE YOU A GREATER CHANCE IN FINDING A SCHOLARSHIP OR LESSEN THE CHANCES OF YOU GETTING ONE. I KNOW THAT SEARCHING FOR A SCHOLARSHIP IS FRUSTRATING AS HECK BUT WE ALL HAVE TO DO IT.... BUT THERE WERE TIMES WHEN THEY HAD NOTHING FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS UNTIL DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS CAME TOGEHTER AND RAISED MONEY BY HAVING FUND RAISERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT TO GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY SO THAT WE COULD GO TO COLLEGE AND GET DEGREES, SO JOIN THE CLUB.

Nice post, but at the same time there is a discrimination view against white people. The middle class also gets screwed so in the end, it sucks to be white and in the middle class. You have to either be dirt poor or filthy rich.
And yes, there are scholarships out there.
You are right and that is sad that you have to be either or in order to get help with school funding. That is something that we will never understand due to the ways of the guidelines and the laws. But in order to make a difference or make a change to the way things are being handled we have to speak out and let our voices be heard or show the law makers that middle class don't mean left out or forgot about, if enough people speak up there has to be a change. Why? Because no one wants to have fingers pointed at them for not wanting to help with funding someone for an education.

Good point!
An example of that right now is (off topic some...) people coming down on Bush for all of his mistakes (etc..). Well someone on here brought up the great point that Clinton could've done more on his part when he was in term... but no one wants to point the finger at a democrat.

You are right about that, but all of them could have done a little better on the way education is bring handled. The way things are going we are going to have to take out loans for school for our children and a second loan out on our homes for our children when they get ready to go to college, the way things are going. Because the way the cost of college is rising we are going to have to do something.

I have a hard time viewing this as discrimination. There are many scholarships available for all races. The cool thing about giving your own money away is that you get to choose who to give it to. If you choose to give it to someone of your own race, great. True discrimination is being banned from hanging out with your best friend because you're Indian, being denied a job because you're Black, not being waited on in a restaurant because you're Hispanic, or being reqired to meet higher expectations because you're Asian. These are what minorities experience every day of our lives. It's not easy to deal with, and there truly are more barriers for a person of color to do anything in life. Luckily, it's all changing, but slowly.
There are some scholarships available for middle class, and LOTS that are only merit-based. These might be the ones you should go for.
