Do you read the gossip?

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I'm addicted to celebrity gossip. Ok, I'm really embarrassed. I don't know what it is and why I am so drawn to it. I must waste up to an hour of my day every day online reading the gossip sites like Perez Hilton, E! Online and People. I have this strange fascination with what these actors, singers, socialites are doing. Part of me hates it, part of me can't help it.

I know you're probably thinking, well if its such a big deal just don't visit the sites. But its like, I feel that if I'm not up on the gossip that I'm missing out. I love knowing things before other people, and I like to stay on top of all news, but why this?!? It doesn't help that most of my friends are 18-23 year-old girls in sororities. I am actually thinking I have my sorority to blame for this celebrity gossip addiction because the girls are always talking about such things. But that would be unfair to blame my sorority as I'm sure a good portion of them don't bother with the gossip.

What sickens me the most about it, and this is the fact that I try to remind myself of when I visit these sites, is that I am fueling an industry that makes millions off of endangering and invading the lives of a select group of privileged, sometimes talented, individuals. Whether you follow celebrity gossip or not, I am sure you are aware of how invasive some Papparzi can be. I mean look at Britney Spears, her situation is just so sad and the whole world gets to point and laugh. Not to mention the fact that she can't leave her home without a Paparrazi posse. It's terrible really. We have all heard the stories of Papparazi endangering the lives of celebrities and innocent bystanders in their quest to get a money shot.

So I think it is important that I try to avoid these sites and fight my "addiction" to celebrity gossip. Sure they are funny and easily entertaining. But I hate to think that if I do contribute to the gossip industry if it means that I am indirectly fueling the fire. I guess I can feel good if I'm not reading the latest news about who's pregnant, who's divorced, and who's in rehab, knowing that I am not contributing to the profits of the gossip mags.

I know this is not the most important topic, but it is on my mind, and I have a feeling I'm not the only one who feels this way.

So is anyone else out there with me?

Ha Ha Ha, yes I read it also. It do not live by what I read but it always seems to catch ny eye and is fun to read. This was a great post.

I read the stuff every morning. My addiction is www.pinkisthenewblog.com. So I understand you completely. It helps me appreciate the simplicity of my life and keeps me thinking about what I do and why. So is it necessarily bad? No.
If you want just limit your reading, that's whats I've done. I only read one now instead of a trillion. I just put Cnn.com in place of like PerezHilton.com, so I would be reading more substantial information.

Haha so funny you say this. I just rearranged my google home page. I previously had news feeds from People and E! Online on my home page, but I swapped them for the CNN news feed and the Reuters news feed.

You are right it is refreshing to read the silly stories because they do make me feel better about being, I guess, "normal". But yes I do agree that moderation is the key. I have been thinking about it, and I believe that the fact that the gossip sites are updated so frequently makes them interesting as well because there is always something new to read.

But I am cracking down, thanks for the support! :)
