So...a while back I wrote about how Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was rewriting Japanese history. Not long after his resignation his replacement, Yasuo Fukuda, is at it again.
In the latest revisionist stroke, Fukuda proposed eliminating the lines in the history textbook that acknowledged the Imperial Army-induced mass suicides on the island of Okinawa. Towards the close of the second World War, as American soldiers began advancing towards the islands, Imperial Army soldiers presented Okinawan families with two grenades and few options. The soldiers told them that the Americans would rape the local women and crush the local men with tanks. They commanded them to use one grenade to kill the soliders and one to kill their families. However, many of the grenades failed to explode and Okinawan men killed their mothers and sisters with whatever they could find: rocks, tree branches, their bare hands. Nothing of this nature occurred in towns where the Imperial Army was not present. And yet as far as Japan is concerned, this never happened.
The Okinawans are protesting...will we?
