Yesterday, I was walking back to my dorm, and I came across a squirrel perched on the side of a trash can. He had a nut of some sort that he was munching on.
As I moved closer, he scurried down the outside of the can. I moved farther away, and he resumed his position, perched up on the can.
Nervously watching me, he shucked the nut of its shell, letting the pieces drop into the trash can. When it was finished, it left the trash can. I followed the squirrel and tried to offer him food, but that's irrelevent.
What is relevent is, I believe I found an environmentalist squirrel.
On the one hand, while it is a nice gesture to throw the shell into the trash can, they will ultimately be thrown into a dump or landfill, where they'd end up on the ground, just like they would if he had thrown it on the ground in the first place.
But, the shell is naturally biodegradible, so the shell would break down in the dump without much problem, being good for the environment. But if that's the case, he could have just thrown the shell bits on the ground here instead of wasting the gas, trash bags, and labor required to haul shell parts to a dump.
On the other hand, it's just a fucking squirrel.

That's all I have to say.
