The Things Women Can Get Away With

I was at work the other day when "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood came on the radio.

I know the song's been on the radio for about two years now, but I never really thought of it in a sociopolitical context before that night.

I'm not sure about the IP restrictions for posting song lyrics, so I'm only posting the chorus. The full lyrics can be viewed here.

I dug my key into the side
of his pretty little souped-up 4-wheel drive,
Carved my name into his leather seats
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights
Slashed a hole in all 4 tires
Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats

When you read the lyrics or listen to the song, what words might you use to describe this girl? Here's a list I came up with:

-Justified
-Righteous
-Assertive

But think, for a moment, how radically your perception of the narrator might change if co were a male. Nevermind the fact that it would probably screw up the rhyme and the meter (not that it was ever that well written of a song in the first place). What if it were the girl cheating and the guy enacting revenge? Now your list probably changes to: something like:

-Jealous
-Violent
-Obsessive
-Abusive

In the mid-seventies and early eighties, there was a movement to change the dominant perception of women as weak and submissive. It is apparent, however, that this movement has only devolved into a revolution in which women get away with act of aggression that men wouldn't because otherwise it would be oppressing the 'weaker sex'.

40 years ago, a man might very well have gotten away with that sort of behavior, perhaps even be praised for it. Now women have taken that archaic male role, as men silently wait to be chosen by women for fear that their pursuit might be construed as sexual harrassment.

If we, as a culture, want to achieve full sexual equality, we must be willing to be held responsible for our own actions, not as a man or a woman, but as a person. We must be a society that not only allows its women to act as men do, but also one which allows men to act as women do. We must be a society that doesn't determine the difference.

That was the first word that came to my mind. I hate that girl power bullshit, and I'm a feminist. Being a strong woman does NOT mean being a vindictive vandalizing asshole.

And also, way to give the police a solid lead by carving your name into the seats. Idiot!

My thoughts exactly! I know that a lot of people do see that as justified and all, but when I first heard the song, I was like...wait, isn't that illegal? And extremely stupid?
There are much more satisfying and legal ways to get revenge on a cheating guy than that.

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

womanizing has always been frowned upon. even picking on those weaker than you was, regardless of sex. while some have gotten away with it, i am sure that most good men wouldn't have agreed, or wouldn't have stopped it, because of the LAWS at the time led them to believe that it was another males right to treat others as such.

a good number of women take advantage of mens overly sexual nature. they get free drinks, free clothes, free dinners, free jewelry, i mean the list goes on and on of what they get for free, and why? because most men are too busy, drooling and panting while thinking with their crotch more than their actual brain.

i don't see why feminists go as far as they do anyway, they never really left the seat of power in the first place, especially when homosexuality is still semi-vilified. maybe they just need to remember that men, with all of their strength and logic, still just want to hump almost everything that moves.

I don't really understand your last paragraph. Elaborate? Or better yet, clarify?

And I'm curious...how far do we feminists go?

i knew you might ask me to do such. another blog out soon.

soon is now a moment of the past....

Well, Carrie Underwood did recently come out and say that that probably was not the best route to take when you find out your boyfriend cheated on you.

violence is never the answer, even violence against another's property.

Here are my two cents.

So gender is a socially created thing. Ya were different biologically but gender is based on what culture percieves it. If it be strong and courrageous women that let us roar. If it be the weaker sex than damn it lets change that because were not the weaker sex. There are strengths to being a male and female.

I know that (as you can read in some of my previous entries), but I'm not talking about gender here, or rather, I'm discussing heteronormative gender here. That is to say, I'm really discussing the typical sex-gender pairs (male=penis female=vagina), so the distinction you make is largely irrelevent in light of my argument.
