First let me share some backround on my family and how this subject came up last night. I grew up in a household where there are mostly men and they are the type of men who burp and fart all the time. My parents grew up in the 50s and 60s. They taught us kids to try not to burp in public or cover your mouth and say excuse me. But when we are at home my Father and my brothers burp and fart all the time and my dad never yells at my brothers for doing it. Last night i was eating dinner and I burped yes it was pretty loud, but I have heard worse. my Father turns to me and tells me "Breanne Marie you need to learn to be more lady-like!!" and he was totally serious about it. He was so mad at me and I totally wanted to scream " OH I am sorry I left my Petty Coats in the last century!!!" My friends told me that he was scared that I have become too Tom Boyish or that I am going to be a lesbian. My family has known I have been a Tom Boy since I was really little so I know that is not it and I like boys so that is not it. I really just want to know when the lady-like thing is going to go away. Now I do hate it when really feminist women yell at men who hold the door open for them because that is just rude, I mean I hold doors open for anyone who is going through a door behind me because it is nice to be kind to others. I just want to be me. I wear boys clothing, poney tails, play baseball, video games, and I burp and I fart. SO WHAT??? who cares about lady-like because in my eyes that does not exist anymore. I understand the being polite in public and not burping without exucing yourself, but in the comfert in your own house when everyone else is allowed to do it, but me? It brings up so many things that has happend like that in my short life. It makes me want to scream at my father and a lot of men who are his age. I could make a long list of things that is a double standard in my household it is not even funny. My brothers were allowed to get tattoos and dye their hair when they turned 18, my dad said over his dead body when I asked. My brothers were allowed to drive on the freeway and stay out later, I am not allowed to drive on the freeway and I have to be home by 11( BTW my brothers each got into two accidents I havent been in one). Girls have to do indoor chores while boys have to do outdoor. Stuff like that has gotten old way too fast and I am sick and tired of it!!

I think you have your words confused. A feminist is some one who is all about equality between men and women. Maybe you mean feminine?
I think that she is talking about some of the radical feminists who find men (individual men) to be the reason for women's oppression in society, and holding the door open for a woman in oppressive to some of those radical feminists.
I've never burped out loud in my life, and I'm still a lesbian. One never knows.

I expect boys and girls to be decently and equally polite around me and not burp and all that in public.
I think your parents just want to protect you though they are being unfair. I suppose they view girls as weaker and want to make sure you are safe. Also, they have certain ideas about gender roles and expect you to conform. I'm not saying it's right and I've been through a similar experience, but I do understand where they come from. It's useless to bluster about. Perhaps you should respectfully and firmly lay out your arguments to your parents. If they refuse to listen, there's really nothing they can do to stop you from doing as you like.
I agree that your parents should treat both you and your siblings the same, but I agree that part of the reason why they chose to treat you differently is because of the time period in which they grew up. From that, I don't really think that you can blame them, because there were more obvious differences in behavior and treatment of males and females in their time.
