Yes, it’s true. A spider bit my bum. I didn’t feel a thing. I noticed a tender, red bump that I thought was a zit on Tuesday. On Wednesday, this red bump had progressed to a larger bump with a black center.
It didn’t get me down. I went to work Tuesday for a few hours at my part time summer job, then went to my real job for a few more. After working at my part time job Wednesday, I finally decided to go to the doctor when my butt started to throb. She confirmed that it was a brown recluse bite, and that I shouldn’t be sitting although sitting isn’t going to make anything worse. Imagine living a life in which you can’t pull up a chair without having a sharp pain shoot through your bum. Not cool. She also advised rest, ice packs, and lots of water, and that there wasn’t much we can do at this point other than watch, drink, and wait. I made an appointment for reinspection of my bitten butt on Friday, but until then there’s not much I can do about it other than watch and wait.
So here I sit on my couch, in pain, blogging for some progress, when I realize that this is what progress is all about. When the world tells you to sit down and shut up, you stand and scream. Instead of loathing in self pity, we have to fix the situation we are in and take advantage of the resources we do have. There’s a certain point when conventional strategy just doesn’t work, and one must defy the instruction manual to improve. I’m not advocating the idea of not listening to the doctor, but do I have to listen to everyone who says I am never going to change anything, and that my actions will never make a difference? I think not. I can watch my butt all day, waiting for the black circle to do something, or I can focus on what I can do for the time being and hope for the best. I may not be able to change foreign policy, but I can help an immigrant do their taxes. I may not have a million dollars, but I have a free public library, the internet, and an uncontrollable imagination. Each small step towards a big end goal is progress, and we can’t get there without action. You won’t find me watching my spider bite all day and waiting for it to do a trick or something. I’ll be changing the world, stopping only for an occasional ice pack change.

Ouch! You have my sympathy in regards to the bitten butt situation and kudos in regards to the rest.
Is it odd to insert a, hoping your butt is better soon here?

Uhhh yeah sorry about that situation too.
But the rest of your blog is really good to. It is what progress is all about and I guess sometimes it just takes being bitten on the ass...literally...for us to get things
Too bad we can't take the exterminator's approach and prevent the problem before it occurs. That would require too much thought, I presume.

yes, yes indeed it would but I too wish we could do that. I mean it would be a win win situation, less bugs and problems haha.
Bugs love me for some reason. I have a bite as well on my hand. I believe it is a spider because I see 2 "fang" marks.
This is progressive and I as well hope your butt feels better. Witch Hazel works wonders on all kinds of bites. It burns alittle bit, but it will make feel better and heal faster.

Love comments? I do too!
Connecting progress and a butt bite...unbelievable! Nice work. I never would have made that connection. Ever. But I am inspired. Next time my butt is bitten, I am going to get off my ass, as it were, and DO something!

On Wednesday, this red bump had progressed to a larger bump with a black center.
Now that is the most unusual way of progressing something. But no I really liked your blog on progressing period. I know how you feel. I got a bite from the same spider on my lip though. I couldn't do too much because it really drained me . I know this sounds gross , but to really get rid of mine, I put my earwax on the bite and a few days later it disappeared .
When life hands you lemons, invite over someone who's life has handed them tequila and throw a party!
We all need a good bite in the ass once in a while to stir up those progressive feelings. I'm glad mine's not a spider bite though :-)
Hope the bum is ship-shape soon!
Why doesn't MY life ever hand me tequila?

I agree. If I want tequila, I have to tickle life hard enough that the witch pees her pants, then steal it while she's changing.

Nice turn of phrase!

way to stay productive and positive! And you have my sympathies for your throbbing bum .
Thanks! Ironically, I was bitten by another spider today. I actually saw this one, and it wasn't poisonous so I shouldn't have to go through this mess again.
