So, in the past decade video games have come to the height of popularity and with the rise to fame has come much questioning and turmoil. I personally enjoy video games and am quite surprised that they have caused such dispute. From Lemmings to Call of Duty, and Pong to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, I have played many games and have experienced most all genres available. So what are the main disputes when it comes to video games?

First of all, many people blame video games for the surge in violence that has taken place in today’s society. It is rather unfair, however, to allocate all the blame to just one area of our society. I must admit that the brutality and violence in video games is sometimes grotesque and gratuitous. But the same can sometimes go for movies, TV and even books.

When looking at game violence, the only games that are brought into view are the ones that exhibit an excess of killing, blood and brutality. What about the others? Where are they when this issue is called into question? There are thousands of games that exhibit little to no violence. Tetris, Pong, GuitarHero, and sports games are a few that come to mind. It is not the only thing that video games portray, so it is sometimes difficult when people attack video games as a whole.

Second, many people find themselves to lost in a game. Whether they cannot tell the difference between games and reality, or they do nothing else in life but play games. I have personally played one of the most popular games that drags people in and soon embodies their life. That game is none other than the world renowned World of Warcraft. I must admit that the game is quite enthralling and enjoyable. And it was quite difficult to go online and end my subscription to it. I can see that an addiction like this would be quite devastating and could ruin someone’s life if they were too devoted to it.

All in all, I enjoy games and just wanted to talk a little about the controversy that seems to surround them. I would also enjoy discussing anything surrounding this topic, so please comment.

I don't personally own very many game consoles, but I have cousins who do...

First of all, I'd like to say that my cousins were homeschooled. I'm not saying that ALL homeschooled kids turn out like this, because I personally know some who are brilliant. However, homeschooling was not the best thing for my cousins. Instead of schooling, they spent their days playing video games. They became addicted. They are now in their 20's, still living with their mother, without a job.

I am a seriously big gamer/computer geek. However, I know my limits and priorities and responsibilities. Sure, I'll come home and play some Diablo II : Expansion Set on the PC for a bit... AFTER I finish my homework.

But what happens to me during the summer? I become like my cousins. Mindless drones addicted to gaming. "Just one more level!" I'll admit to wasting many a summer on games like Bloody Roar, Soul Calibur, Fable, Zelda, and the list goes on...

I, personally, would never act out a game. I'm obsessed with them, but not to THAT extent. My cousins, on the other hand??? I sometimes worry about them. I think it's best that they stay inside their house. I feel bad for dissing on my cousins like this, but nobody else knows em, and I didn't name them, so I guess it's all good.

That is a very ineresting story about your cousins. I could never see myself becoming that addicted. One of my problems is that I want to get out of my mom and dad's house, even if I attend the in-state university that is really close. I want to get out of the house.

But, I know exactly what you mean about the 'just one more level.' It is like at least one in the morning everything else is silent, except for your preferred gaming system (i don't even want to get into a discussion about this...). You can barely feel your butt cause you have been sitting on it for hours. But you simply cannot go to bed until you finish the next quest. However, once you finish the quest, you have almost leveled up, so you might as well do that. After leveling up, you realize that there is a new item that you can wear that wasn't available before... and so on, until it is six in the morning.

It just seems to spiral out of control. Eventually the only thing that got me to turn it off was sheer lack of ability to keep my eyes open. It is these kinds of things that keep people so involved and gets them to blur the differences between reality and the pixels on the screen. It is somewhat sad.

Lol. I've totally experienced that. Playing till you can't keep your eyes open, and then you DREAM about whatever game you were playing. "Oooh! I'm Link on Epona and I'm totally destroying some serious skulltulas!" I'm SUCH a geek. HAH! Wow.

I think it's sad that people can't decipher reality from a pixellated screen.
