Yellow!

YELLOW! It's like hello... except... with the yell part. So... yellow to everyone! Thank you for checking this blog. A friend pointed me to ProgressiveU, which sounds like a very interesting place to engage in the market of ideas. Since this is my first post, I thought I'd introduce myself, my credentials, and tell you a little bit about what political perspectives you can expect.

I'm a Texas Home Schooler, which means I have some great parents. I was involved in debate for three years, but I'm taking a break this year. I got to the NCFCA national competition all three years by the grace of God. While having the pleasure of working with debaters at the Austin Rhetoric Club, I became my state's Lincoln-Douglas Value Debate champion, and the four state regional Extemporaneous champion. In addition, I've won at my local science fair. I have aspirations to be an engineer, but I may also go into politics. If you've got anything analytical, let me know. I'll love it as long as it doesn't break the rules. My passions include God, science, research, and politics. I hope the experience I've had in communication and research help me reveal the various facts and factors that effect the world we live in.

Now onto politics and philosophy, since that is what people around here prefer to talk about. I think of myself as, well, a non-label-arian. If at all possible, I want to avoid placing labels on myself. I am what you would call a Christian, although that isn't entirely accurate. I prefer to call myself a Jesus-follower, but Christian is pretty close. Read: Non-denominational. Politically, I'm more Republican than Democrat; more conservative than liberal; and I sympathize, though refuse to label myself, with libertarians. I'm an independent spirit, and I like it that way. I love Liberty, but recognize that she is a beast that must be limited or she will destroy itself. I am very critical of government action, but also respect the rule of law. I admire the American founding fathers, even though they are certainly not gods. Above all, I honor Jesus, my Savior. And I stick to the facts.

Does my faith mean that I am blinded to logic and Atheists have no business reading this blog? Absolutely not! I believe that God has reasons for what he says, and we can explore them together. I just feel that I need to give credit where credit is due.

To rap up my first post, I want to provide some quotes I find very insightful. Here's an awesome speech I think you should read. And its... almost... Texan:

"We have the right as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right to appropriate a dollar of the public money... We cannot without the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a debt. We have not the semblance of authority to appropriate it as charity."
~Davy Crockett

And these two quotes nicely embody the spirit of this blog:

"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."
~John Adams

"Only lay down true principles, and adhere to them inflexibly. Do not be frightened into their surrender by the alarms of the timid, or the croakings of wealth..."
~Thomas Jefferson

Rally, citizens of principle!

Thank you. I appreciate the welcome. Now, what exactly are these "progressive principles" that we are supposed to uphold?

Art Morgan, the ProU founder, posted a little bit about the Progressive principles here but the general consensus is that they are open to interpretation and debate... and they are often quite heavily debated here.

And I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

L33T speak is highly discouraged.
