Corrupted freedom

“It was the tiniest
thing I ever decided to put my whole life into.”

Terri Guillemets

This is a story of a young girl my mother came into contact with a few years age whom taught her more about life and love of God than
any church service ever could have done. This is told from her point of view:

At the place where
I worked I saw many teen mothers coming and going every day.  Some gave their babies up for adoption, some
had their babies taken, and still others chose to keep their babies. One
particular girl left permanent foot prints on my heart and soul.

Her name was
Diana.  She was a fourteen-year-old
pregnant teen.  This girl had three
siblings and grew up in a home with a mother who was constantly on drugs.  Her mother brought many men home with her,
some of whom sexually abused Diana.  She
suffered from neglect from her mother and basically raised herself.

Diana had all the qualities
of a potentially good mother despite her young age.  She practiced good nutrition and exercise,
asked lots of questions about parenting and pregnancy, and prayed for her baby
everyday.  Praying was not practiced by
many of the other girls.  I admired Diana’s
devotion to God and her growing baby.
Loyalty was scarce in a young, previously abused, teen mother.

Close to her baby’s
due date the court ordered she stay at the home.  Many girls came willingly; however, Diana did
not enjoy this luxury.  Diana would have
stayed even if the court had not ordered it.
She was set to prove all those wrong who believed she was too young to
properly raise a child.

She gave birth to
a beautiful baby girl.  Diana offered to
get a job at fourteen because DFCS required her to have one.  It turned out all the requirements of the
court and DFCS were only formalities.
They never intended to let Diana keep her baby.

I made sure Diana
got a decent lawyer.  However, this
lawyer obviously thought this case was not worth his time.  On many occasions the lawyer did not want to
talk to Diana.  He was not interested in
what she had to say.  To him she was
white trash.  I threatened to inform
media and/or the Bar Association.  I even
found a foster home willing to take in both the mom and the baby.

Unfortunately DFCS
still removed the baby and placed her in a home with two other teens. However,
they promised Diana that if she did what they told her she could get her baby
back.  I made sure to keep a close watch
on the baby’s progress.  Less than a week
later DFCS told the foster parents they could adopt the baby girl soon.  I was infuriated.  DFCS never planned on returning Diana’s
baby.  To them she did not come from the
right home and could never amount to anything.

Sadly the baby
died in the foster home within one month of placement.  The official report was that the baby died in
his sleep of unknown causes.  I, however,
don’t always believe the official reports.

Since the baby’s
death I have always thought of what could have been.  My one regret is that I should have brought
Diana and the baby home with me.  I could
have saved that baby.
